Just a few CRCT Testing reminders for this week and next week.  We will be testing on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of this week (April 23 -25). and Monday and Tuesday of next week (April 28 & 29).   The reading test will be on Wednesday.  English/Language Arts will be on Thursday.  The students will take the math test on Friday.  Next Monday's testing will cover Science. The Social Studies section next Tuesday will conclude our  CRCT testing. We will begin testing shortly after 8:00 each morning.  Late students will have to report to the media center until  the class is finished section one of the test.  They will have to make-up the missed test at a different time with an administrator.  Please be sure your child is at school on time so they can take the test in our classroom and have the benefit of being in familiar surroundings.

We will take snack breaks between each of the sections.  Please send at least two healthy snacks (fruit, nuts, cheese & crackers) and a water bottle  daily.  A good night's rest, a healthy breakfast, and a good attitude will all help your child do their best.  They will also need a few sharpened #2 pencils (no mechanical pencils are allowed).  We have been practicing and reviewing test taking strategies over the last few weeks.  I'm confident my students will do very well and show what they know!!!!!!!!!

Please reserve Tuesday morning May 13th from 8:20 - 9:00 a.m. on your calendars for our "Author's Tea".  Your child is looking forward to sharing all their creative writing from this year with you that morning.

Don't forget our last (Relay for Life sponsored) Chick-Fil-A biscuit breakfast on April 30th at 7:25 a.m. I have seen entire families enjoying breakfast together in our cafeteria! The $3.00 (for a biscuit & Sunny Delight) is due by April 25th.

Have a wonderful week!

My class is really looking forward to our field trip to the Cobb Civic Center.  We will be viewing "Duck Tales" a magic show.  The class will be eating lunch about an hour later than usual in the cafeteria.  Please remind your child to wear their class t-shirt tomorrow.

READING~ The class is enjoying reading their chapter books and completing Literature Circle "jobs" with each chapter.  I will grade these Literature Circle packets for a reading grade.  I have discussed the criteria I will be using for grading with my students. They are as follows: complete detailed sentences, correct spelling, effort, and following directions for each "job".

This nine weeks in writing we are focusing on personal narratives. The students just finished a piece about a time a friend helped them or "stood by them" at a time when they really needed someone to support them.

I have seen grades on Mountain Language and DOL quizes really improve!  I can tell that students have been studying their Daily Language Practice sheets.

SOCIAL STUDIES~ My students have shown a great interest in the regions of Georgia.  We have studied the ocean, the coastal plain, the piedmont, and the mountains.  The have completed small booklets on each region and will be selecting one region to do a small class project. Each student will make a poster of a particular region.  This poster will include 7 facts on that region along with illustrations depicting the landscape, animals, and plants.

MATH~ We just completed our study of fractions and have been working on decimals to the nearest tenth.  We have also been working on perimeter and area.  The CRCT is fast approaching and I want to make sure we have covered as many skills as we can before the test.

The CRCT will be administered April 23 - 29.  We are taking some practice tests in class, but please be sure your child has been using their log-in number to also practice at home.

Please review the Garrison Mill dress code:

  • No flip flops
  • No midriffs, tops with spaghetti straps, or tank tops
  • Students must be able to stand straight and have fingertips touch hem of skirts or shorts

****K-2nd will be given a warning.  They will be sent to the office for a phone call to parent.

****3rd-5th grades will be sent to office.

Have a wonderful, safe, and restful spring break!!!!!

Please have a talk with your child about the importance of being a good listener and waiting to socialize till recess.

Math~ The class is really doing well with all the new vocabulary and skills in Ch. 16 (geometry).  We start every lesson by writing a few new vocabulary words and their definitions in our Math Journals.  I am anxious to see how the class did on their timed tests in division this week.  I will be sending home another packet next week...yippee! Hope you can come play math games with your child next Thursday evening during Math Night.  Ms. Beatty and I will be partnering up in her room.

Language Arts~ My students did very well on their Lesson 4 Wordly Wise test last Friday.  Unfortunately I still have a few students experiencing a little bit of trouble with the DOL quizzes over punctuation and capitalization.  Please be sure that your child studies their Daily Language Review sheets.  These come home with Thursday papers.

Ralph S. Mouse, Hundred Dresses, Mitch and Amy, and Harriet's Hare are some of the books my students have been enjoying during reading groups. Be sure to look at the awesome Story Flags the class has worked on when you come for Math Night. They focused on title, author, main characters, setting, and their favorite part of the book.

Science~ The class has begun a unit on heat and energy with Mrs. Himmelberg.  They should be bringing their Science books home a few times a week in order to study and review what they discussed in class that day.

It  was so nice to meet with each and every one of you during Conference Week.  Believe it or not we are down to our last 65 school days.  Hope all my wonderful students are practicing their CRCT tests online.

Thanks in advance to Ms. Mapp, Mrs. Picon, and Mrs. Riley for volunteering to come in for our Valentine Centers tomorrow.  The class is looking forward to arts and crafts and heart shaped treats.

MATH~ My students have just completed our unit on division.  They understand the concept well and only need to work on mastering their facts.  I will begin sending home division timed test packets after our mid-winter break.  We will be moving on to Geometry next.

LANGUAGE ARTS~  I have added Wordly Wise to our lessons.  We will work on these packets every other week.  This program really works well on building vocabulary and comprehension.  We also use the story questions to formulate complete sentence answers.  The class moans and groans through this process, but I assure them that writing complete sentences is an important skill ! When these packets come home with Thursday papers please make sure your child studies the unit words and their definitions so they are prepared for the test that will be given after each unit.

SOCIAL STUDIES~ You will be so impressed with your child's knowledge about the U.S. government.  We have discussed the election process, responsibilities of the president, Washington D.C., and the three branches of the government. The students are working on a Power Point presentation on the 3 branches of the government.

HEALTH~ Dental health will be our focus next week.  We have already had a fabulous Wellstar presentation titled "Smile Power."  Good dental hygeine was discussed.  The children learned that there are 13 teaspoons of sugar in a can of regular soda!!!!!! My class will construct a model of a tooth and label all the parts.  We will also review vocabulary related to this topic.

  • Jan. 14 or 15  High Touch High Tech lesson
  • Monday Jan. 21   Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
  • Jan.  22-28  Conference Week - school will be dismissed at 12:30 each day this week. Watch for the form stating the time and day of your conference to come home with papers on Thursday.  Cobb County elementary schools have been given permission to delay distribution of report cards from the current published date (Jan. 11th) to the dates that coincide with conferences in January.
  • Tuesday Jan.  29  Chattahoochee Nature Center Lesson 2

We will begin Chapter 11 in our math books.  I will be introducing my students to the concept of division and the vocabulary that goes with this skill. We will explore dividends, divisors, quotients, inverse operations and fact families.  The class will also be going to Mrs. Himmelberg to begin a short study of magnets.  In language arts we are continuing to work on grammar skills through Daily Language Review and Mountain Language.  Our reading groups are focusing on finding information in text by highlighting or underlining the information as well as reading the questions first, and then reading the text.

**Please check with your child to see if they may need any school supplies.  Many are missing green pens.

I look forward to meeting with you during conference week!

Hope all of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I wanted to thank all of you for attending the Grandparents and Special Friends Luncheon.  It means so much to our children and they love showing off their special guests.  I wanted to thank the Naqi, West, Macy, Benjamin,Picon, Wisdom, Mapp, Martin, and Riley families for their generous book donations to our class library. The next few weeks are going to fly by, so fasten your seatbelts!  Our class holiday party will be on Thursday Dec. 20th from 12:30-1:30.

Language Arts~ We are finishing up our chapter book Lucky Charms and Birthday Wishes. We have completed comprehension questions on each chapter and written short character descriptions.  I have discusssed with my students that their grades on these worksheets will be based on the amount of detail and organization they put into their responses. In English The class has been working on singular and plural possessives.  This is a challenging skill for them as they get plurals and plural possessives confused.  We will work on this skill until they have a better understanding of it.  The spelling words this week are mother, light, country, father, and let.  I am continuing to have the students write their addresses as a part of the dictation test.  Most of the class is still NOT doing this correctly.  Please work with your child on learning how to spell their street names and  city.  Knowing how to write their address is an important life skill. ** I hope all my students are keeping up their Reading Logs.  Please remember they are responsible for reading 420 pages this nine weeks.

Science~    The class has begun a study of soils with Mrs. Himmelberg.  This chapter covers how soils are formed, types of soil, and conservation.  Mrs. Himmelberg plans to test this chapter next Thursday (Dec. 6th).

Math~  We are deep into our study of multiplication!  The students understand the concept, but need to practice their facts (0 through 10).  I have begun sending home weekly timed tests.  Mastery of these facts will assist your child as they will be able to work more accurately and quickly.
