Next we will be learning about holidays around the world and how they relate to American culture and diverse community and family celebrations and customs. This unit is directly related to our Social Studies standards (SSKG1). We will culminate this unit with a "trip" around the world! Every class will visit all the other "K" classes and learn about the country that class is representing. Your student will have their own passport, and will be bringing home a faux suitcase loaded with information about the countries they visited. This excursion will take place on Dec.15, 16, and 17th. Our class will be representing Mexico! Please make sure that your child is on time for school on these days, so they won't miss their flight to the next country! Please take the time to look over all the wonderful information, crafts, and recipes that your students has worked hard on during this time.

The children will also make a ticket (homework) for their admittance to the movie. You will be receiving more info on this next week. We have prepared a short program for your enjoyment so be sure to bring your camera, as there will be plenty of photo opportunities. Your child should be able to tell you about the Pilgrims, where they came from and why, where they settled, and who helped them when they got here. In Social Studies we have been learning about what state we were born in, where we live now, what country we live in and what continent the United States is in. They should know what a globe and a map are, and we are starting to learn about cardinal directions, so please help your child with conversations about these things, as it is a difficult, abstract concept. We are looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday at 10:40 for our performance, then lunch at 11:05. Please visit our book fair after lunch with your student as this is the only book fair we will have this year. We bring the students back to the room by 11:35. Have a wonderful, restful Thanksgiving!

We have studied how leaves change colors, the four seasons, apples and pumpkins. Community helpers have been a large part of this months standards as well as symbals of our country. Last friday we really got our hands dirty with High-touch, High-tech in school field trip. The children should have brought home a bag of rocks that they "mined" and a certificate for their participation. This experience covered our standards for science that includes rocks and soil. This friday is bus driver appreciation day, so please have your child make a card at home for their bus driver! Also, this saturday there will be a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria starting at 7:00 a.m. until 11:00a.m. This is all you can eat serving pancakes, fruit, sausage, juice, coffee, milk. Come out and support your G.M. foundation! On friday, Oct. 31, we will be having special "pumpkin centers" at our usual center time. Our room mothers are planning some very exciting activities for the children. Our policy is that only "K" students may dress-up for these themed centers, so they may bring their costume to school, and change for our center time, then change back to school clothes before lunch. Please, no masks or scary costumes or weapons are allowed. Thanks in advance to our wonderful room mothers for all they do for us!!

It is hard to believe that we are in our seventh week of school! The class is maturing every week, and we are comfortable in our routines. We have finished our second math book, and our units on five senses and colors. Your child should be able to tell you about primary colors, secondary colors, and patterns. Our in house field trip with High-touch, High-tech was wonderful as all the "K" kids got to see, feel, smell, hear, and taste all different kinds of things, hopefully they told you all about it! Thank you to all of you for sending in your items for our class taste test, we really had a good time eating our way around our taste buds! As we move into fall, we will be learning about what happens in the fall to the trees, apples, and pumpkins. We will be having special fall centers on October 31 with our room moms, more about that will be coming home. Some of our next units will be about families, and friends, Columbus, and community helpers. In math we will be learning more about number sense, greater than, fewer, and equal, and sets. I have also signed our class up with scholastic book clubs to earn free books for kids in need. All we have to do is collectively read 100 books, and send in our chart, and scholastic will give new books to the charity of our choice. When ever your read a book to your student, write me a note, or they can tell me what the book was, and we will keep track of this on a chart in our classroom. When we reach 100, I will let you know, and I will have a certificate for every child. We will count the books we read in class also, as I read to them daily. I think this is an important lesson for them to learn at an early age, about how we can make a difference! Please remember to read everything we send home, as well as practice all the words of the week. We will be testing on the "red" words of our rainbow this week. Thank you for all you do to help your child be successful!

Please keep up with the words of the week so your student won't fall behind, and they will be ready to test on our rainbow words soon. Please send back the Behavior Expectations Handbook, with the required signatures as soon as possible. This is the booklet we talked about and gave out at Open House.
