Helpful websites

Here are some helpful websites for your child that will reinforce what we are doing in class:

Go to the GM site and then click on "Links for Students."  Go to Notebook.  From there go to 2nd grade.  Under math you will find "Timed Math" which is a fun way for them to practice their math facts.  Also, in math there is a game called "Give a Dog a Bone" which will familiarize them with the 100's chart. 

For spelling help go to Spelling City and click on "Find a list."  Type in "Sharon Sanders" to find our list of spelling words.  We will be working on Unit 2 this week.  You will notice that there is a regular Unit 2 and Unit 2 enrichment.  There are some interesting ways for your child to practice their words on this site.  Have fun!!

I thought you might want a list of our main ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS for the first nine weeks for Second Grade. 

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

 

Reading:  How do I become a great reader?

Writing:  How do I write to describe?  How do I write a personal narrative?

Math:  What do numbers represent?  What ways can I show a number?  How does the placement of a digit in a number affect its value?  What strategies can I use  to add larger numbers?  How can combinations of numbers and operations be used to represent the same quantity?  How are numbers  affected when they are combined?  How can charts, tables, and graphs help me organize and understand data?  How can I show the relationship between, seconds, minutes, and hours?  In what ways can I represent a collection of coins or bills?  Why is it important to be able to count money?

Science:  What happens as seasons change?  How can we describe matter?  How can matter change?

Social Studies:  How does understanding intermediate directions help us travel from one place to another?  How do the geographic features of Georgia make our state unique?  How do the geographic features affect the economy of Georgia?  What are the different types of land and water in Georgia?  How can rivers and oceans be used for communication and transportation?  How can people affect rivers and oceans?  How can understanding the graphic features of Georgia help us to value our state?

Health:  How do I plan healthy meals and snacks?

Technology:  What drawing tools can I use to create an illustration?

Great Sneak a Peek!

What a wonderful Sneak a Peek!  So much enthusiasm from the students and the parents!  I have no doubt that we will have a great start to the 2011-2012 school year!

Please remember that we have PE on Monday, so have your child wear tennis shoes.  We will snack in the morning, so pack them something filling and nutritious as they will be "starving" by our lunch time.  They are encouraged to bring in a water bottle that they can refill here at school for the bus ride home. 

There will be a fun homeword assignment given on Monday that will need to be turned in by Wednesday of this week.  We are making scrapbooks of ourselves.  Hopefully, this will become a "keeper" and will be fun to look at in years to come.

Open House for our grade level is on Thursday, Aug. 18th beginning with a PTA meeting at 6:30 with Orientation in the classroom immediately following the meeting.  At that time I will review the 2nd grade curriculum and the procedures for our room.  I hope to see you there!
