Curriculum Updates:

Reading:  Our small groups have been working on informational science texts.  We are working on main idea and supporting details.  In large group we have read Truman's Aunt Farm, which is a cute account of a little boy and his trickster Aunt Fran who have fun with the homonyms "aunt" and "ant."  We will make sentences and illustrations with other homonyms.  We have also been learning how to summarize a story.

Math:  We are finishing up 2 chapters in math.  Chapter 3 deals with tally tables, Venn-diagrams, bar and picture graphs.  Chapter 4 teaches strategies to help with addition facts.  The next chapter will start on Monday and works with regrouping (carrying) in addition.  This can be a very difficult concept for second grade.  Please help by constantly reviewing the basic facts and looking over and discussing papers in regrouping that will come home.

Science:  We are concluding a unit on Matter with Mrs. Latimer.  The class has had a great time doing all of her interesting experiments!

Social Studies:  Our study of Sequoyah and the Cherokee and Creek tribes that lived in Georgia will continue. We will compare and contrast life back then with our life today.

Sitton Spelling:  The next few tests in spelling will be used for summative evaluations in the subject.  Please review the word list weekly.  These tests will NOT come home, but you are welcome to come in and see them at any time.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO GREYSON!!!!  He will celebrate his 8th birthday this Friday, September 26th.

A Teacher_note_clipartpaper was sent home today about lunch for the upcoming Field Trip.  Please indicate if your child will need the cafeteria to pack a sack lunch or if your child will be bringing a lunch from home.  I need these back by this Wednesday, Sept. 17th.  I apologize for the very short turnaround on this.

Progress Reports will be sent home this Thursday, Sept. 18th.  Only those children who are struggling academically or who are struggling with behavior will bring one home.  Please sign and return these reports to me.

September 10, 2008

I will be sending home an AR printout tomorrow showing your child's accumulated points as of 2:30 p.m., September 10th.  I have also written in their AR level to help you select appropriate books for them.  Students earning 5 or more points by the end of the first nine weeks (10-10-08) will earn a treat/movie for their hard work.  HAPPY READING!

If you have not returned permission slips/donations for the field trip to New Echota or for Performing Arts, please do so ASAP.  I need your permission in writing to take your child away from the building.  THANKS!

Dancing_students A huge "thanks" to Mrs. Robertson and Mrs. Izzo for being on the ball!!  Our Reading Parents and Copy Parents are all up and running smoothly.  Today you also should have received an email with the class roster and all pertinent student information.  I really appreciate all of your hard work!

Here is an update on the curriculum:

MATH~We are completing our work on comparing numbers to 100, using the greater than and less than sign, rounding to the nearest ten, finding and completing patterns, and recognizing odd and even numbers.  After we test these concepts this week, we move on to working and interpreting the various types of graphs.  Continue working with the basic math facts in addition and subtraction.  The children are expected to pass a 7 minute timed test with 90% accuracy in both.  95% or higher exceeds standards.  CONGRATULATIONS to Ian, Greyson, Brent, Matthew, Sarah, Kaya, Erica and Carter!!!!!!!  These students have all passed addition and are now working on subtraction.  WOW!

LA/READING~We finished an auto-biographical story in our anthology entitled George Ancona, Then and Now.  Using the pictures you sent in last week, we are working on creating our own picture albums.  After editing them with a partner, look for them in the hallway.  We will begin working in small reading groups this week focusing on story maps and finding important details.

SOCIAL STUDIES~We have been using cardinal and intermediate directions to locate places on the map.  We have also zeroed in on the 5 geographical areas of Georgia.  The children are finishing up a project this week.  They chose 2 of the area and are writing sentences and drawing pictures of their selected regions.  We are using our new text book a GA Social Studies magazine, maps, and videos as our resources to do the project.

SCIENCE~Mrs. Latimer will begin a unit on MATTER with our class next week.

Thanks to all of you who have encouraged your kiddies to save their change for Sanders' Store.  With August's collection, I went to that wonderful, teacher friendly dollar store and bought some treasures that I hope they will love.  THANK YOU!  Should any of you have any "treasures" that you would like to donate, please send them in.  "One man's junk, is another man's treasure!"

Should you have any questions, always feel free to contact me.
