Friday May 23rd  End of Year Breakfast!

I would love to have a breakfast to share with my students on the last day of school. We will be having plenty of ice cream and sweets throughout the day, so I thought some good ole fat and protein would help us (me) survive the last day. If you could send a morning favorite in, that would be great. I was thinking some mini bagels with cream cheese and jelly, croissants, pigs-in-a-blanket (Mrs. Duggins will send these) and anything else you would like. Of course we can have some doughnuts or sweet treats,I just didn't want it all to contain sugar, your children are already sweet enough:)! Remember students will not be able to take anything home on the bus the last day, so if yo do send something be sure and put it in something disposable. I will ask Mrs.Dinnan to send this via e-mail as well, so we can correspond when necessary.

Thanks again for all you do!

Hello and happy Monday to you all. I would like to first thank all of you for attending your child's conference and for all your help in making sure your child is successful. I told them just how fortunate they are to have you.

At this time we are working on quite a few things. In the computer lab we are completing our circle story " If You Give a Penguin a Pizza..." We will be sharing it with you via e-mail or on my blog. I will be sure and let you know. We are starting Unit 18 in spelling and working on adjectives, simple nouns, verbs , and adverbs in Shurley English. In writing the students are learning how to write a persuasive paragraph. Last week they began by trying to persuade me to get a class pet. Their writing had to include the pet, how the responsibilities would be managed, as well as safety and cost. In Social Studies we are doing a Readers Theater play on " The Statue of Liberty". In Guided Reading we are finishing up the book "Georgia" and students will be completing their report this week. In math we are continuing with division. We will have our Chpt. 11 review test tomorrow and the chapter test Wednesday. We will then begin Chpt. 12, division facts 2 and 5 and 3 and 4. In science we are finishing our study on Heat. Our center rotation for the next 3 weeks will consist of a heat investigation for science, creating the Statue of Liberty in art, reading comprehension on "A Capital City, Washington, and District of Columbia for social studies, comparing maps and globes for manipulatives,The story of the young "Martin Luther King Jr. at the listening center, daily fact practice(add/subtract/multiply/divide) at the math center, and for the writing center the students will refer to a picture and write a response to it. We will also be making a Valentine gift for our 2 groups of Book Buddies. If you could possibly send a bag of treats to help fill their gifts, that would be very appreciated.

Lastly, I have a few reminders for you.

Hello, hello! Only 10 more days to go! Yes I am excited as I am sure you all are too. I know the children are.

One very important note- Our class Winter Celebration is Thursday the 20th from 12:30 to 1:30. Please make a note. It is down as Wednesday the 19th, which is incorrect!!! If you have any questions just let me know.

More important information- "Cobb County elementary schools have been given permission to delay the distribution of report cards from the current published date (January 11th) to the dates that coincide with conferences in January ( January 22-28)."

Academics in the classroom- The last two weeks of school we will be finishing our chapters on multiplication and will begin exploring division when we return. We will also begin our multiplication timed tests this week. Our reading groups will continue working on reading and locating information within the text. In writing we are working on Informational Writing. Each student is to choose a topic of information they are interested in learning about. We will utilize the Media Center and classroom resources to acquire our information. The students are to read 2 books and one other source of reference when doing their writing. They will use a Thinking Map to help compile their findings. After writing a draft, they will edit and then publish. Please remember to sign and write a short response to your child's journal writing. We are trying to write every Tuesday and Thursday, but many aren't returning their journals from the Tuesday writing, to go on to Thursday. It is very important for you to look at the writing. Also if you could please have your child write a short response to the books they are reading for their logs. Any guidance and encouragement from you is a great help. In Language Arts we will continue reviewing daily homophones/homographs, antonyms/synonyms, root or base word-prefix/suffix, nouns-singular-plural-possessive/verbs/adjectives, subject/predicate, contractions, and of course capitalization and punctuation including end marks, commas, apostrophes, and quotation marks. In science we are learning about magnets and will finish with our unit on Georgia's government.

As always if you have any questions or need me for any reason, please e-mail me and I will get back with you within the day.

Thank you for all you do,

Robin Brown

October 28th, 2007

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful, cool weekend. I know I am.  It's hard to believe we are already in the 2nd nine weeks of school. What I want to do is give you a run down of what we will be covering during this period.

Reading-students will need to read and comprehend informational text. They will need to include the author's use of informational conventions (charts, maps, diagrams, illustrations, and captions as some examples) in reading informational text to understand. Students will be reading a variety of informational texts during Guided Reading and will record key conventions so they can then write and include the convention in their informational writing.

Writing-students will write informational text by using multiple resources to gather information for a research project. After reading three informational resources and using a visual organizer to gather designated information on a topic, they will then use this organizer to write a 4 paragraph informational report.

Math-students will finish Unit 4 subtraction with and without regrouping. They will practice skip counting as a way to begin exploring strategies for developing multiplication fact fluency. The next unit we will begin building concepts and fluency in multiplication and division.

Science-for the first half of this 9 weeks the students will learn about soil. This will include understanding texture, particle size and color play a role in making soils different. Soils are different depending on their physical location. That water and wind can change rocks and soil over time. That soils are a by-product of rock. For the last part of this 9 weeks, students will learn about magnets. This will include understanding that magnets have north and south poles. That the earth is a magnet. And that magnets use invisible forces to to attract and repel objects.

Social Studies-students will learn about Government and Their Community. We will learn about economic and civic components of local government. This will include understanding taxes, rights and privileges, rights of people/laws and consequences. We will also continue learning about maps and globes.

Spelling-Language Arts-we will continue with Unit 9 in Sitton Spelling and a new unit will follow weekly. Five new words come home on Mondays and the spelling rule for that week come home Tuesday, so they can practice throughout the week. We will also continue with Shurley English vocabulary and English rules.

Please know if you have any questions or concerns please e-mail me at robin.brown@cobbk12.org, or send a note in your child's agenda.

A few notes and reminders- Tuesday is High Touch High Tech, please have your child wear his/her class t-shirt.
