Although still warm outside, fall has arrived along with much excitement about the upcoming fall break. We’ve enjoyed working on “Colors” this week in order to extend our Five Senses unit and learn to read and write color words. The use of color words in writing is a great way to begin using descriptive words. Students can express their ideas more specifically when they choose what we call “juicy” words. For example: I have a new pink dress. I like the pretty blue bird. These are yummy sweet snacks. Our work with color words will continue with the upcoming Fall Unit of study when we return. We will explore the changes that occur in fall and have some fun with scarecrow books, step by step drawings, and descriptive writing.
In Math, we have been using five’s frames and ten’s frame to work with number sense and “counting on”. We will use five’s frames to work with combinations of five, and begin work with number words “zero to ten”. In geometry, we will be making a Shape Book to continue work with naming, drawing, and stating characteristics of basic shapes. Students need to be able to verbally analyze and explain how two shapes are similar and different.
You have received a note in your child’s folder today about School Bus Driver Appreciation on Oct. 2nd the day we return from fall break. I know it might be hard to remember if you’re going on a trip, but we’re hoping to provide a nice treat for our bus drivers by putting together a variety plate of goodies.
We are thrilled that parents have started to help us in the classroom now during Centers. Please consider looking ahead on the Sign Up Genius calendar site that Mrs. Graham sent out for our first semester of volunteers. We are very grateful for your time. It allows us to work more closely with small groups during instruction.
Conference letters will come home on Monday, Oct. 2. Please reply quickly so that we can confirm appointments for fall Conference Week.
Have a wonderful week enjoying some extra time with your child.
