Request From Mrs. Zarin

Dear Parents,

Our third grade performance is fast appoaching. Mrs. Zarin needs our help! Please read the following and help her out if you can!

Important Musical Request…

Calling All Mr. Potato Heads And Potato Mashers!!!

Parents…

I would like for the 3rd grade children to use potato mashers and Mr. Potato Heads in their upcoming musical performance. If you have any of these items at home, I would greatly appreciate it if you could please send them to school by Friday, October 31st.  Be sure to label these items inconspicuously with the names of both your child and his/her teacher.  What’s that?  You have more than one of the requested articles?  The more the merrier!  Everything will be returned in approximately two weeks (after all of our music performances are over).

Thank you very much!

Laurie Zarin

Music Specialist

As always thank you so much!

A few Reminders

Dont_forget Pancake Breakfast is  this Saturday.  All you can eat for $5 a person.  This benefits the GM Foundation, this buys much needed equipment for your child's classroom.  There will also be a raffle for some great prizes.  I hope to see you all there, this Saturday from 7 AM to 11AM.  I will send a flyer home today with your child.

I stated in my last blog that AR points was 10.  THIS WAS AN ERROR, FOR THE SECOND NINE WEEKS STUDENTS ON AR POINTS NEED 9 POINTS AT THE END. I was thinking of the 3rd nine weeks.

Please see this announcement about Grandparents Luncheon

Download GPL.822 Our class has been very involved in all school activities so this is a very rewarding opportunity.  Grandparents are a very important part of an extended family.  This is my single hands down favorite activity at Garrison Mill.

Bus Drivwer Appreciation Day is Friday.  The students are making cards in Language Arts Class.  We are also putting together "goodie" bags for the drivers.  I bought some Germ X and some hand lotion.  If you guys would like to fill in with some mints, gum, tissues or candy that will make our project complete.  Just send in items with your child.

Box_tops

Thanks to all who turned in Box Tops.  If we don't win for third grade, we collected a respectable amount for the school.  Thanks for your contributions.

October 20th

I hope that everyone had a great weekend.  The weather is so great this time of year.

Report cards went home last Thursday.  Yellow envelopes and sign cards need to be returned.  There was also a letter that explained promotion requirements for third grade.  The top portion is yours to keep, please read the information, cut off the bottom portion, sign it and return it to school.  Please feel free to ask any questions that you are unclear to you.

The students will now need 10 AR points for this next nine weeks.  I am happy to say that all students satisfied the reading requirements for this past nine weeks.  Thank you for your support.

Math this week is Chapter 4, subtraction.  We will learn how to subtract but also and most importantly, when to subtract via a word problem. Remember if the students can't use the subtracting in everyday situations then they have not learned the concept.  The unit on time was very difficult for the students but they all did a wonderful job.

Right now the class is so fun to work with.  They are engaged in learning and are making wonderful progress.

Important dates:

Tues.: 10/22 fact buddies

Wed.: Box tops are due

Thurs:Spelling Test Unit 10, Chick Fil A Biscuits if you ordered, Fact buddies

Fri.: Bus Driver Appreciation Day, Reading Parent Mrs. Hamel

As always if you have questions please ask as my door is always open to you.

Thank You

Thank_you

I had a wonderful birthday.  The "bat cookies" Mrs. Hamel made were delicious.  We enjoyed them for morning snack.  The card that the children signed was beautiful.  I was so surprised that the children had time to sign the card.  The Andy Warhol bag was perfect.  It is so beautiful it will be difficult to use it.  I wanted to take a moment to thank you for making my day special! It was a great day!

Reminder

Dear Parents,

A gentle reminder that if you have not sent Mrs. Hamel your class dues please do so.  She needs these funds to keep our classroom running smoothly.  I will staple reminders in agendas tomorrow.

Thanks,

Mrs. Moore

Second week in October

Fall FALL IS HERE!

I hope everybody is enjoying this beautiful weather as much as I am.  The mornings are crisp and relaxing.  Our class celebrated the season with beautiful fall collages.  We collected leaves and then melted beautiful fall colors among them.  They are gorgeous!  We studied various forms of poetry; acrostic, alliteration, haiku, couplets, limericks and free verse.  Each child chose a style and wrote a poem.  We went to the media center to type our poem on Word and add a fall picture.  See standards addressed for this activity posted outside the classroom.  They not only wrote poetry but they learned about the functions of the computer.  It was an awesome project.

As a follow up to our poetry unit and study of fall we are photographing fall.  Students will be organized into groups of 3 -4 students.  Each learning team will have a digital camera.  We will walk the grounds of GM to discover signs of fall.  Each student will take a digital picture that represents fall.  The pictures will be printed and each student will write a caption to go with their picture. The essential question for this activity is:

How do captions help us understand a picture and text?

This activity directly relates to how the children read and understand informational text.  They soon learn that the pictures are directly related to what they are reading or the main idea.

Science was tons of fun these past 2 weeks.  We studied the rock cycle and learned a new song to remember the different types of rocks.  During a science lab, we made rocks and then observed the differences of each rock.  The next week, we made fossils and reliefs of fossils.  We will stop with rocks and minerals for 2 weeks on Tuesday.

Social Studies will begin on Tuesday:  The unit of study is Economics.  Man o Man do we have some real life examples around us!  Ask your students about their Snakes and Donuts production teams.  We will conduct Snakes and Donuts every Friday during our earned reward.  This is where the students actually experience supply, demand , quality control and working together.  I am contemplated a product production activity.  This would be where a group of learners would use materials, craft or art items, to produce a product and have a market day.  This task is way too big for me so if a parent is willing to help me I will tell you what all is involved.  It would be a true to life example of supply and demand.

We will celebrate Columbus Day tomorrow.  The students will complete a place mat of Columbus's Adventures for morning work.  We will be actively involved in a Promethean activity that helps the students better understand why we celebrate Columbus Day.

Math has been tons of fun this week.  Chapter 6 focuses on time.  We will have a math test on Wednesday. The sub topics are AM, PM and elapsed time.  This skill can be difficult for some children.  We have used our classroom clocks to calculate how much time has passed and we even used a linear clock as another way to understand time.  We cut out pictures from magazines to represent AM and PM as an additional assessment.  A clock that actually has hands on it could be a great holiday gift. (hint) Kid need to start evaluating time.  Example:  What time should we leave for practice to get there on time?  Questions like this will stimulate understanding of time managment and elapsed time.  Many times you will see 5 minutes or some other time on the top of your child's homework paper.  We estimate how much time assignments will take.  The students then time themselves and compare their estimate to the actual length of the assignment.

Time math is going great.  HOWEVER: we cannot stop at multiplication.  The students need to be practicing their multiplication facts daily.  When they have passed their multiplication facts they need to start on division. We need to always be looking ahead.  Think of it as a gift you are giving your child.  If they learn their facts this year they will be more motivated to attack lengthier assignments as the computation will not slow them down.  Fact Buddies will be on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.

Spelling is Unit 9 this week, our word study is homophones.  Remember, the students are to chose a different "Spelling Choice" each week.  Dear Parents are being completely weekly and I am very pleased that the students now seem to see the challenge question at the bottom.

Read Aloud continues with Danny Champion of The World.  We are almost to the end of this exciting book.  We wrote our response to literature using this book.  The students chose a character and explained reasons why a particular character was both good and bad.  This utilized the skill of character analysis where the students actually responded to the character and how it was developed in this book.  We wrote these papers in our best handwriting.

Guided reading will continue as well as independent reading and grammar during our guided reading block.

A huge thank you goes to Mrs. Wood for attempting to copy.  The machines have been a bit temper mental lately.  Thanks to Mrs. Hamel for sending in Fall books to read and for organizing the Fall Ironing Project.  Mr. Zath brought some awesome books for reading parent on Friday.  Thanks to Mrs. Minor and Mrs. Pietsch for helping with our art project.  Thanks to the Minor girls for their cleaning and closing down the classroom on Fridays.  It takes a village and due to parent support your kids reap the benefits of a hands on approach to learning.  Thanks to all for making our classroom a positive learning community.  It is a true pleasure to come to work.

Monday Oct the 20th is Bus Driver Appreciation Day.  (I could not be a bus driver, it is a very hard job that takes a special person)  We will make cards in language arts.  Every year the kids ,in my classroom, bring in travel size items that a bus driver might use.  These items could include small lotion bottles, pack of breath mints or gum, Emory boards, stickers to give the kids that have good behavior or any small item they could keep on their bus to make their day a bit brighter.  We will decorate bags and place the items inside for a special treat for the hard working drivers.  If you would like to contribute please send your items in anytime before 10/20/08.

Reminders for the Week

Fall_leaf I enjoyed seeing most of you at The Fall Festival.  I had a splendid time serving up some cotton candy and popcorn.  There were some very hungry folks at the festival.  I hope that a good time was had by all.

Our class t-shirts turned out great.  We received many compliments as we went through our day on Friday.  The students were so polite and gracious about my art work.

Poetry is our fall focus.  We gathered 3 fall leaves and will make them into a collage of colorful leaves. We are also writing Fall Poems.  Cruise by the wall outside our classroom to read our creations.

Spelling is Unit 8 this week.  Our spelling grades have been awesome.  Thank you so much for your support at home.

Guided Reading-we are continuing guided reading and this week we will focus on informational text related to rocks and minerals.  I love listening to the children read and helping them become better understand learners.

Letter writing is a focus as well.  Wee Deliver is up and running.  The students love to get mail.  Why not drop a letter to your child and it will be delivered on Thursday.  Our address is 409 Calla Way, Whistle Stop, Georgia 30003.  We have been writing during our language arts block.

Monday we have a test on Chapter 3 and a pretest on Chapter 6.  Remember that is your child scores an E on the pretest then their grade stands and they are in an extension group for chapter.

Fact buddies and timed math are great.  Almost the entire class is on multiplication.  I love the mentor ship of the fifth graders and our third graders.  Keep working on facts at home as well.

It says on our calendar that we will be studying economics this week but I have decided to continue with rocks and minerals for this week as we are right in the middle of instruction.

A thank you goes to Mrs. Hamel for creating our October calendar and to Mrs. Wood for copying for us.  This makes our classroom work much smoother.

As always, have a wonderful week and if you have questions ask.  My door is always open to you.
