Feildtrip Information

Dear Parents,

Your child has an informational letter in their book bag about Wednesday's field trip.  Please read it.  Several students need permission slips.  At the beginning of the year, they were to be turned in but I was so overwhelmed with slip of various kinds that I neglected to check these.  I apologize.  I sent permissions home today with those who needed them.  Please check your child's book bag today.  Please have students wear their class t-shirts on Wednesday. Thank you and I am sorry for the late notice.

Marching On

Dear Parents,

The Habitat Posters were awesome.  I could tell that most students took their time and followed the rubrics closely.  Presenting their posters was a treat as well.  They have grown so much since the beginning of the year.

This week is action pack:

Monday we will finish the presentation of the posters.  In science, we will continue our study of heat and energy.  We will complete the last lesson Monday and review for the written test that will be on Thursday.

In math we will continue our linear measurement and be tested on chapter 15 on Tuesday.  Monday we have our math bee as  it is the last day of the month.  We are also taking timed math assessments this week for those who have not passed all the 4 skills.

April 2nd we go on a field trip to the Atlanta Civic Center to see a play.  Specials and lunch times are changed due to the trip.  We go to specials from 8-9 and eat lunch when we get back.

We continue with our literature circles and our read aloud book Marley.  Literature circles are very good for academic work ethic, Independence and comprehension.  The students are doing a great job.

Practicing taking tests like the CRCT will be done with language and geometry skills this week.  This is to get the students accustomed to the testing format.

As always have a wonderful week and a great spring break.  If you have questions please ask because my door is always open to you.

Week Ahead

Dear Parents,

We had a very productive week.  We worked on our persuasive papers and created a cover via Power Point.  We finished our geometry unit and are studying measurement in Chapter 15 next.  The geometry tests were great.  We are listening to Marley and also conducting literature circles.  The students will have their habit project due on Friday, March 28th.  They will present them that afternoon.  We are having several conversations about this project and how you can create a habitat.  The poster is a performance test grade for this unit.  Heat is our science unit and we should have a test the following week.  The students seem really interested in this topic.

I am attaching The Habitat Poster Rubric so the children can use it to guide them.

Dear Parents,

I hope several of you enjoyed a tasty burger at Backyard Burger tonight from 5-6.  10% of the profits will go to Garrison Mill.

Picture Day is tomorrow and class pictures will be taken also.  We don't have pictures until 11:40 so I will do my best to preserve them until picture time.

We are collecting canned goods for Must Ministries this week.  The Student Council is the force behind this important service project.  Look through your pantry and see what we can come up with to help others.  I like to call it , "pantry diving."

Image:Nuvola apps important.png HABITAT POSTER DATE CHANGED:  I FORGOT THAT MANY OF US WOULD BE CELEBRATING EASTER AND HAVE EVENTS PLANNED.  I BELIEVE IN FAMILIES AND WANTED TO CHANGE THE HABITAT POSTER DATE TO FRIDAY MARCH 28TH.  I AM SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION.  I WANT TO LINK THE RUBRIC BUT CAN'T DO THAT FROM HOME.  I WILL TRY TO LINK IT BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

Today is St Patrick's Day, remember to wear green.

Mrs. Bragg will come to our room on Monday morning to have a mini 30 minute lesson on study skills and organization and I will work with a group to complete an activity on active listening.

On Tuesday morning Wellstar will come to our classroom and present a lesson on nutrition.  This should be very informative and fun.  The topic is part of our health standard for third grade.

We will be having a math test on Chapter 16 Tuesday.  It will be over geometry we have learned. Remember to keep practicing those facts at home.  I can tell they have been working hard.  Remember that "fact buddies" come on Tuesday and Thursday of each week. This is such a wonderful time for the kids to practice their facts.

We have begun reading Marley by Jon Grogan.  It is the story of an adorable dog and a family's adventures.

The children are in literature circles and guided reading groups. The lit circles read a fiction book in small group that is on their level.  In guided reading the text is nonfiction and contains information on our country and community.

We are making habitat books.  When we have completed all the habitat books then each student will choose their favorite habitat and make a poster representing it.  This a project to be done at home.  The children will put together the "marsh" book tomorrow and then they will choose their favorite on Tuesday.  The poster will be due Monday, March 24th.  I will send home a rubric to guide them in their choices.

The student's writing is really awesome.  Our research reports are displayed outside our classroom.  Take a stroll down the 400 hall and read interesting information about the states. They have come so far since the first of the year. We will finish our persuasive papers by next week.

We are starting a heat and energy unit in science.  On Monday, we will read the text and on Tuesday and Wednesday we will conduct some hands on experiments to learn about heat and temperature.

I want to thank everybody that came for Math Night.  We had most of you attend.  I appreciate your time to come and learn some math and be involved in the school.  The students really appreciate it.

Spelling will be unit 27 in Sitton Spelling.  Remember that a homework grade is taken on Dear Parent activity each week.

As always have a great week and feel free to call or ask if you don't understand.  My door is open to you.

Additional Info

The students worked beautifully today.  Perhaps they were tired from the time change but they had a great day.

Reading logs are due on Friday, March 14th.  Every student was required to read 490 pages.  Most of them have already reached this goal. I appreciate all support that you have provided to help each child reach this goal.  I have seen a huge improvement in reading since the beginning of the year.  Way to go!!

The Atlanta Percussion Trio will perform for the children at 8:15 tomorrow morning.  This should be treat for us all.

The Chattahoochee Nature Center will  be in our classroom tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.  This will be our last trip from the CNC.  These in-school field trips have been so valuable for the students.  The instructors are well prepared and informed.  Many times they bring a live animal with them for the children to see and touch.

Bingo Night is this Friday at 6:30 right here at Garrison Mill.  It should be a fun time for all.

I hope everyone has a great week and I as always let me know if you have questions.

March Updates

March is here!

Dear Parents,

First of all, thanks to everybody that brought baked goods for the Relay For Life Bake Sale.  The children enjoy the extra snack and the profits go for a great cause.  Thanks for giving back!

The talent show was awesome.  During practice I was placed on the back row.  During the real show I was front and center.  I am still trying to figure out how that happened.  Thank you to everybody that supported the children.  It takes a lot to perform in front of that many people.  I was very impressed with all the children and the talent.  It was the best ever talent show.

We have a busy month of March.  I could not believe it when I turned February to look at March.  I apologize for not informing you sooner about READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY.   Monday, March 3rd the students are allowed to wear their PJ's to school.  They have PE on Monday so pack a pair of sneakers too.  We will read all day.  Hopefully, we will complete Charlotte's Web.  We will begin our literature circles again.  They will have time to read silently.  I have told the students if they would like to bring a book from home that they are that would be fine. Listening to audio books on the computer will be a good activity also.

If Monday is reading day then isn't logical that Tuesday is Math Day?  We will start chapter 16 which is Geometry.  This should be a fun hands-on chapter.

I sent home timed math packets for the students to practice.  I sent the whole packet so the students can pull out what skill they are working on and then progress to the next skill.  It is expected that all students have mastered multiplication and division facts by the end of the third grade.  Seven minutes is the time for 100 problems.  They should master at 80% or better.

March 3-7 is Book Fair Week.  We will go to browse on Tuesday from 11:00-11:15.  I took a sneak peak during the Talent Show and they have beautiful books for sale.  Stop by and check them out.

Tuesday, March 7th is Early Release Students are released at 12:15 Please make sure that your child knows how they are getting home.

Thursday, March 6th is Math Night  6:30 This will be so much fun!  I will be doing some of our on line programs that are on the GM web links as well as estimating skills and a few more hands on games.  I will be looking forward to seeing all of you on Thursday Night.

Sitton Spelling is Unit 25.  A few students will move to Wordly Wise this week to enhance vocabulary and spelling skills.  I will assign on an individual bases.

The students did a wonderful job on their research projects.  Each and every student learned something new.  I was so proud of them as I read their reports.  I am hoping to have them up by Thursday Night for Math Night.  I know it was a Language Arts Project but I thought that you might like to see what the children created.

We are also writing our own multiplication or division word problems.  The theory is.....if you can write it then you understand it!

If someone has an hour or so this coming Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday I could use some help displaying the  research papers and the math word problems.  Just let me know ahead of time and I will try to have the supplies ready.

Copy moms and reading parents have been awesome.  The children love to see their parents in the classroom.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any concerns or questions  about your child or the curriculum.  My door is always open to you.

Our "Be Kind to Animals" persuasive papers will begin on Wednesday.
