Conference Week and Beyond

SOCK HOP TONIGHT AT GARRISON MILL

You may dress in fifties attire if you have it.  If not, come as you are and join in the fun.  There is food from the Varsity, desserts that are being sold to benefit Relay for Life, and tons of good music.  I am sure it will be a great time for everybody.  Please know that every child must come with an adult and the adult must stay at the dance.   6:30-8:30. I will try to make an appearance but it will be after 7:00 or so, I hope to see you all tonight.

This week was crazy.  I had so many plans and not much was accomplished due to the early release.  The children did make their state report organizational folders.  We spent two separate days on the computers in the media center gathering information.  They are learning to take notes from factual sources and put it in paragraph form.  We will go to the computer lab on Tuesday to begin our report covers.

We did not get through chapter 11 but will begin with 11.4 on Monday and have a math test on chapter 11 on Wednesday.  Please be working on multiplication and division facts with your child.  Our fifth grade math buddies come every Tuesday and Thursday to do flashcards with our students.  These are students that had difficulty learning their facts and they didn't want other kids to go through what they went through.

I am reading Charlotte's Web to the students and we are discussing the plot, characters and qualities of the book.  This is such a precious story where the animals really take on human like qualities.  New vocabulary is introduced so we will use our dictionary skills to define new words.

BE KIND TO ANIMALS WEEK:  We will not begin the persuasive paper until we are finished with our research papers.  The students seem anxious about this.  I will lead them and explain each step to them.  I revealed various topics so that they could think about what they would like to write on.  Sometimes I give too much info.  SORRY if I made the kids worry, everything is going to be OK! Promise!

Every parent was given directions for the CRCT home practice tests.  Please have your child complete a few of these a week.  You must use the number that was on the paper I gave you at conferences.  Please let me know what test they take and how they did.  You all are very supportive and it is very much appreciated.

UNITED STATES MAP PROJECTS ARE DUE ON JANUARY 31ST, THURSDAY

PLEASE HAVE THEM READ AND FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.  THIS IS A LESSON IN MAP SKILLS, FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS AND TIME MANAGEMENT.

On Tuesday, February the 5th we will have a student from Kennesaw University teach a 45 minute health lesson.  I will supervise and approve the l;lesson but she will execute it.  It is so nice to be able to help out young adults who are interseted in education.

Don't forget to document 360 minutes of reading for a ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia.  This is not a grade but it is expected that each child complete the 6 hours.  Thanks for supporting reading.

Thank you for volunteering for Reading Parent.  I can not tell you how much the children enjoy their parents taking the time to walk into their world and share a book with them.  I appreciate it so much.

We are also enjoying our book buddies in Mrs. Gabriel's room.  We [plan to read with them every other Friday.  The kids like this activity.

Garrison Mill is starting a Bullying Awareness Program.  Presently our goal is to teach the children what is bullying is and to raise their awareness.  Knowledge is a powerful tool.  We are having a poster contest.  The winning poster will have their poster reproduced and hung up all over the school.  They can use the computer or draw.  Please read the directions and have the children complete their poster.

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend and don't forget Monday is our last early dismissal day.

Your child will recieve 3 stickers on their nametag if you tell them the BLOG secret word is "snowflake"!

What a Great Week

Dear Parents,

Your children were so awesome this past week.  In math,  we are finishing up Chapter 11, introduction to division, on Tuesday.  We are moving right along in math.  Please allow your child time to complete their math page and practice math facts every night.  It is essential that they can readily remember multiplication fact and division facts.  I have incorporated many thinking skills within the math.  The students are doing a beautiful job with this.

Reading logs are due EVERY MONDAY.  PLEASE make sure that your child is reading every night at least 25 minutes.  The due date for the 420 pages is MARCH 14TH.  It is helpful if the students keep a running account of total pages.  This will help with time management.

We began our magnet unit this past week.  We conducted a magnet lab to see which objects were magnetic.  During a Promethean Board activity we also review the facts we learned in our lab.  To further expand our knowledge, we watch Bill Nye's Magnet video.

Be Kind to Animal Week Art Contest parent permission slips, they are green, went home on Friday.  We will be writing our persuasive papers about being kind to animals and then we will submit our art to the Humane society to be judge.  This contest is in Hall County, Gainesville, Georgia.  We will just send them off and they send us a ribbon and a certificate of participation.  The lady I spoke with asked if she could come pick up the art work and bring PUPPIES.  I will let you know what Mrs. Wilson says about this.  I am all for it if the kids would like it.

We are starting State reports next week.  We will do a class report on Georgia and then each student will select a state to report on.  This is an in class assignment as I need to take them through the process.  It is a new skill for most of them.  There will be a technology component to each report and Mrs. Schullman has assured me that we can post them on our blog so you all can see our wonderful creations.

We are reading Chaorlotte's Web whole group and working on comprehension, vocabulary and I am modeling fluency in oral reading.  They will have a little quiz as we finish this up.  What a wonderful book.  This book also counts towards their reading log.

I will see you all next week for conferences.  Please remember that the children get out of school at 12:15 next Tues., Wed., Thurs., Fri., and Monday.  Please be prompt for your conference as 20 minutes is not long.  I also have a schedule to keep so be try to have your questions written down or prepared ahead of time.  If you need additional information from me then we can reschedule for another time.

A HUGE thanks goes out to all the parents who have helped in the room so far.  We will be setting up a Parent Reader schedule shortly.  Thank you to MRS> Cook, who we call our angel" for making copies every Thursday.  It makes a big difference. THANK YOU!

I will see you all on Tuesday or sometime during the week.  Have a great weekend.

Here is a virtual snowman sight if you would like to build a snowman indoors.  Remember you will be leaving Garrison Mill website when you click on the link.

Let it snow!!!!!!!!

   Dear parents,

I had a feeling that it might snow.  I don't know if we will have school tomorrow.  Today we read a book about snow people and all the various items that you could use for a snowman.  Then we wrote "Directions For Making the Perfect Snowman".  In keeping with our writing assignment.  Please take a picture of any snowman that you make.  We can print the pictures and display them with the ones we drew in class today.  If we are snowed in tomorrow, please read when you come in for a break.  Here is a link to make a snowflake.  You will be leaving the school website when you click the link.  Have fun and perhaps I will see you all in the morning.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

  New20years_2

Happy New Year!! I hope everyone enjoyed their winter vacatioin! Hopefully our students are rested and ready to learn.

Just a few reminders as we return to school

  • Monday  Jan. 21  No School - Martin Luther King Holiday
  • Jan. 22-28 Conference Week - 12:30 dismissal each day
  • Cobb County elementary schools have been given permission to delay the distribution of report cards from the current published date (January 11th) to the dates that coincide with conferences in January ( January 22-28).
  • Please replenish your child's school supplies for the second half of the year. Many need pencils, crayons/colored pencils, scissors, glue sticks, etc. Our school store does carry these items and is usually open Monday and Thursday mornings before the morning bell rings.
  • Please watch the weather forecast carefully during the coming months, and dress your children appropriately. As we all know, the temperature Jan.-March could be a sunny 70 degrees or an icy 25! We always say, "If you don't like the weather here, just wait a minute, and it will change!!"
