December

It is almost time to have our winter break!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The students are all really excited about the upcoming holidays.  We are trying to do a few extra, activities but need to remain on track academically.

Reading Logs have slipped to a new all time low.  PLEASE help me by having your child read and record their pages every night.  They must log in 6 books at least 70 pages in length.  That is 420 PAGES.  This is not my requirement but is county wide.  I want you to know that they are blaming you.  My Mom or Dad did not fill out my log.  OK, I don't believe everything that I hear but could you please help me help the student make their deadline? I thank you for your support.

Dates to Remember:

Thurs. 12/ 13 there is a chorus performance by Garrison Mill student at the Kroger on highway 92 (fifth graders) from 3:00-4:00.

12/13 is the Roadhouse dinner pick up  (Their food is awesome!)

CURRICULUM

We are completing Chapter 8 this week.  I was VERY pleased with the Chapter 7 tests.  Keep practicing those multiplication facts at home.  I can tell a difference.

Unit 17 is our Sitton Spelling lesson this week.  The spelling tests have been really good as well.

We are still learning where the 50 states are located and the learning teams have picked new states.  Our State Bee will be 12/22

Government is our unit for social studies.  We are focusing on national government the next 2 weeks.

We are working on time management so if your child has some extra work at home this is due to time management.

I hope you all have a great week and thanks for letting me work with your great kids.

News Update

Student Council Elections

We voted, secret ballot, for a student to represent us in the Student Council.  Our Student Council Representative will be Jordan and the alternate #1 is Juliana and alternate #2 is Will.  Congratulations to our representatives.  Jordan will attend a meeting Tues. at 7:20 to find out information about a winter project that will take place.

Holiday Demonstrations:

Several parents have asked to come into the class to do a "holiday" demonstration of a religion.  I would like to celebrate the season as one of Joy and good spirit no matter what your religious belief is.  The way it works in the school now,  if one religion does a demonstration then all religions must have representation.  This could take months.  Some of the lower grades are doing holiday traditions around the world.  I chose to capitalize on the good will of the season.  Thanks for all your understanding and may I wish each of you a very happy winter break as we have all earned a nice relaxing time with our families.  I will not assign homework over the break.

Holiday celebration:

Our "Holiday Party for the Classroom"  is on Thursday, December the 20th from 12:30-1:30.  I am sure it will be a nice time for every one.

Well Star come tomorrow to do a health demonstration on germs.  This is part of our health curriculum.

Our state projects were awesome.  The students will have more specific material to find out this month.  They will present their material on the last day of school before we leave for winter Break.

STATE BEE:  We will divide into 2 teams and play STATE BEE on the outside map.  It will just like a spelling bee but they will have identify the states.  I knew this was a must when one of students asked where the state of Scotland was and another answered they thought it was north of Georgia.  We are learning the 50 states and where they are located.

Social Studies Unit:  This unit of study is about the local, state and national duties of the government. We are learning about the jobs and the different laws.  We will have a paper and a drawing representing one the laws for their evaluation.

Reading Logs: Reading logs are due each Monday.  Today 10 students did not turn in a reading log.  Each student should read every night for at least 15-30 minutes.  At the conclusion of the book they must take an AR test or write a summary or complete an ABC book.  Please help me reinforce their reading it is calculated into their grade for reading.  they should also be reading higher level books than in fall.  For example, if they were reading at a 600 Lexie they should now be Reading between a 650 and 700 lexile.  Or if they were reading on a 3.5 level book then they should be read at least on a 4.0 book.  The reason is we have been in school almost 5 months so raise the level at least five months.  Please ask me if you have a question about their reading level.
