New Nine Week

The First Nine Weeks
The first nine weeks flew by. what a great time we had. The Corn Festival was great and I was impressed with the projects they created. Everybody met their 6 book requirement. I am so proud of each student and parents as well. We have author studies in the classroom and when we finish an oral book they may take a test on those books as well. The reading journals that some students are using are a great success as the reading scores increased tremendously from the beginning of the year. Rohl Dahl was the author for the first 9 weeks. We read Danny Champion of The World and The Twits. Several of the students checked out other books by this author and enjoy those books as well. Spelling has been a great improvement. Remember that there is a website on the Garrison Mill site. It is on web-links 3rd grade and it has each unit's words and activities to go with them. (Sittonspelling.com) It has a word scramble and a crossword and more. This is a great way to improve spelling scores and have fun at the same time. Timed math tests and math skills are also progressing. Exemplars are fun problem solving activities that we do on Mondays. They are really working hard on our goal of being on multiplication timed tests by the first of November. Rocks and Minerals were a dynamic unit. The students were so interested in this topic I found it hard to end the unit. Proof of skills was in the majority of students demonstrating excellent mastery on the test.
The Next Nine Weeks
Math will focus mainly on adding and subtracting multi digits and multiplication. I suggest you go ahead and get multiplication flashcards and begin working with your child so they will be ready. Social Studies and science is on soils and landforms. I am so excited about their first projects. I hope they learned a lot while constructing their books. Spelling will continue as usual. If your child is on modified spelling, please keep in mind that the goal is to be on unmodified spelling by the end of the year. They need to continue reading at home every night. We started a mini unit on poetry today and the children found writing a cinquain poem about bats was difficult but they came up with some beautiful poems. They are hanging in the hall. If you come to school, come by to read them. I think they are great. This nine weeks should prove to be a lot of fun.
