Field Day

Field day Field Day is tomorrow for 3rd grade.  Please apply sunscreen to your child before they come to school.  The weather should be nice.  If you would like to send some extra sunscreen to apply after lunch, this will be fine.  Please send a water bottle with your child. I will speak with the class before we go to the field about sportsmanship and good attitudes.  It should prove to be a very exciting.  I will see many of you tomorrow!

Yearbook  Yearbooks are coming on Friday. We will pass them out and allow the children to sign each others yearbook this day.  After Friday, please leave the yearbooks at home.  Please help your child decide who they would like to sign their yearbook so they can accomplish this on Friday.

Habitat test is Wednesday.  the students have their science workbook to study from tonight.

Map project due on Thursday.  Please do not wait to complete it the night before.  It is a huge project for one night.

All media center books were due last Friday.  If you have any at home please get them in.

Thanks for all you do to make your child's school experience a positive one.

Relay for Life Luminaries

Dear Garrison Mill Families,

The Relay for Life team will be selling luminaries that will be used in the opening ceremony on Friday Night at the RFL Event at Jim Miller Park.  The luminaries are used to remember those we have lost, celebrate those that have battled and won and to give hope to those who still fight the battle with cancer.

The luminaries can be decorated by the family, they are $5.00 a piece. We will be selling them at reading night tonight, at the PTA meeting on Thursday or anytime this week in Mrs. Longyear's classroom. We will need all money and bags by 2:30 on Friday!

Thank you so much for your support!

Freaky

May 8th- In honor of Mother's Day we will have Freaky Friday May 8th from 1:00-2:00.  The students have been working hard on some activities to share with you.  The students can bring clothes to change so they can be the mother and Moms can come dressed as their child.  No, the boys do not have to wear a dress.  They can bring a tennis racket if mom likes to play tennis or a book if mom likes to read.  It is a fun activity and not meant to make anybody feel uncomfortable.  We have viewed the movie at school and have been working on some Mother's Day assignments that we will share with you.  You and your child may also do a skit where the child is you and you are the child.   Some comical topics from the past have been getting up in the morning, doing homework or chores. This part is optional and is totally up to you and your child.

May 8th is also the day of the Volunteer Brunch from 8:00-12:00.  The teachers cook for the parents in appreciation for all they do during the school year.  I will be cooking some yummy Pigs in Blankets, so don't forget to stop by and honor yourself for helping our classroom run so smoothly this year and for taking such wonderful care of me during and after my surgery and throughout the year.

May 19th is the Author's Tea from 9:00-9:30.  Please plan to come to the classroom to read the writing your child has produced this school year.

May 20th is reflection Day-  This is where they fill out End of the Year Journals that they may take home and keep.  We will create memories of this year by drawing some of our favorites on the sidewalk.  We will write letters to upcoming second graders to let them know what to expect.  This is one of my favorite days of the year.

May 21st is our End of Year Centers from 1:00-2:00.

May 22nd is the last day of our school year.  It will be very difficult to see this special group of children move on.

Please don't forget to print and post the class calendar.  There are more general events that are not mentioned in my blog.  As always, if you have questions please ask because my door is always open to you.

Welcome Back

Dear Parents,

I hope that you all enjoyed your Spring Break as much as I did.  The children are writing about their adventures and are excited to share their writing with the class.

Next week is CRCT testing.  The testing begins at 8:05 AM.  It is very important that we begin on time because we are the first lunch for third grade and we must stick to the beginning time of 8:05.  Please have your child here before 8:05 so we can complete attendance, lunch count and use the restroom.  Testing is  4/23 - 4/29.  The days are : Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday being a make up day. During testing please try to stick to your daily routine as much as possible.  A calm environment makes for a calm student.  A good breakfast is very important, please make time for this and send in a healthy snack as well.

Snack from the Lunchroom: Please have your child bring a snack from home.  If you must have them buy a snack they must have a note from a parent stating that you know they are getting a snack and a current date.  I appreciate your cooperation in this matter.  The students are using classtime to go back and forth to purchase snacks.  They may only purchase before school.

Science long-term project- has been postponed until after testing.  I am looking for 22 uniform boxes.  I thought that they would be easy to find.  I was wrong, nobody wants to part with empty boxes.  I would like jewelry boxes.  (The white cardboard kind with a lid on top).  If anybody has connections with a source of empty boxes we could use for a science project please let me know.

Math We are starting Chapter 20, fractions.  The student know fractions of a whole and will adding to their knowledge by learning how fractions, decimals and percent are all related.  We should have a test next Tuesday.  I will keep you posted on our progress.

Reading Logs:  Several students are not completing their reading logs.  this grade is calculated in their reading grade.  Please check your child's agenda to see if I have written you a note about the reading log.  Reading nightly is a routine that every child needs.  They will have reading requirements all through school.  If it in their routine, the subsequent grades will go much smoother.  Thank you for your help in this matter.

SCIENCE TEST ON THURSDAY- April 17th, this is a written assessment.  If they bring in their graphic organizer signed, they will get 10 bonus points on the test.  Please go over their science packet tonight and tomorrow night.  The test is very difficult.

FREAKY FRIDAY- We are rocking very hard on Freaky Friday.  This is a Mother's Day project where the moms come to school dressed as their child and the student comes to school dressed as the mom.  They are completing 4 activities to present to you when you come.  They have watched the movie and are diligently working on the projects.  I hope you can make time to attend this great event.  The date is the Friday before Mother's Day, May 9th from 12-1.  We will be sending home an invitation in the near future but please mark your calendars.

Literature circles are going well and the children are showing improvement in their reading skills.  Guided reading of nonfiction is also being done.  The focus of our guided reading is citizenship and our government.

Henery The Hand

We have been learning about how germs spread.  Henry Hand talks about the spread of germs at school.  Each student must spend 15-30 minutes on this site for homework.
