The past weeks have enabled us to have the involvement of many parents in our classroom. This is wonderful! So far, parents have helped with our 5th grade T-shirts, being a Game Master in math, reading along with students in groups, and performing science experiments. We have also had a presentation about future plans for a 5th grade newsletter to be published in our class. None of these terrific experiences could have been executed as well without parent involvement.
I am pleased and excited by the future opportunities we will have with more parent involvement! The students and I thank you for your time and efforts to make our year successful, insightful, and thoughtful for us all.
Best regards,
Alex McGill
Occasionally, I have trivial events which I share in class. Students have been encouraged to check this blog to view the answers to the trivia questions posted in class. Generally, they are things that I have talked about in class. The students are always encouraged to use deductive reasoning to determine the answer to the trivia question. I will give them clues as to how to determine the answer each time.
Question #1 was discussed because our school song, "Going to Garrison Mill" is set to the tune of "Beverly Hills" by California rock band Weezer. Prior to Weezer's first album being released in 1994, when I was a graduate student in Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I ate a Mexican dinner with one of the members of Weezer. He is a school friend of my friend Dee Dee. They both went to Bearden Middle School in Knoxville, and this band member's father is a professor at the University of Tennessee. He told me he had just joined the band in time to record their first record with a producer named Ric Ocasek (who had achieved fame by being a member of the Boston pop group, The Cars). This future "rock star" joined to replace Weezer's original rhythm guitar player, who had left the band for family reasons.
The question was posted in the room this way:
1. Which member of Weezer has Mr. McGill eaten supper with (please pardon the grammar)?
A. Pat Wilson-drums
B. Brian Bell-guitar
C. Rivers Cuomo-guitar/singer
D. Matt Sharp-bass guitar
The answer was B., Brian Bell.
