Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful winter holiday...get ready for a fabulous New Year---2007!

In January, Target teachers will be conducting evaluations.  Therefore, Target classes will be cancelled until the week of January 29th.  Look for more information soon on our new units, coming up next:  Sharks (4th and 5th graders), Money Matters (2nd and 3rd graders), and Stepping into Target (1st graders).

                     "Why do Neurons Like Email?"

They like sending and receiving messages!

Mrs. McEaddy's fourth and fifth grade students are collaborating with their team members on their brain projects.  Fourth graders are working on videos to include in their presentations while fifth graders are polishing up their power point skills.  Students have been working very diligently; I can't wait to see the end products!  These projects will be presented the week of December 4th.

Many students have elected to work on an optional project.  Students were given a list of over twenty-five ideas for this optional project, which is based on their multiple intelligences.  These are due the first week of December as well.

"Why do potatoes make good detectives?"

Because they keep their eyes peeled!

Second graders recently solved the Great Chocolate Caper  (Jewell Treasure was the criminal) in a very competent manner.  They have been conducting experiments using chromatography, powder analysis, fingerprinting, lip-printing, and teeth impressions in their quest to understand detective work and mysteries.  On November 29th, they will go on-line to solve another mystery!

Second graders were also given a choice of several optional projects from which to choose.  They may write a mystery, conduct research on a world mystery, or do a report on a mystery writer or a detective.  In addition, they may act out scenes, create artwork to represent their project, or demonstrate proper crime-solving methods.  These projects are due on December 13th.

On December 13th, we will have a guest speaker from the Cobb County Police Department.  An officer will visit our classroom to discuss various aspects of solving crimes.  Students will formulate appropriate questions to ask the officer prior to his/her visit.

Brains and Mysteries, Mysteries and Brains

Yes, our brain is a fascinating mystery and yes, mysteries are solved by using our brains.  Our units have many similarities and we're hard at work, solving many mysteries, including those of the mind.

2nd Graders are using their deductive reasoning skills to sort through evidence, motives, and suspects to solve 30 Second Mysteries, Encyclopedia Brown mysteries, and the Great Chocolate Caper.  We're doing Sudoku, Chinese Puzzles, Mystery Numbers, and logic matrices to help sharpen our critical thinking skills.

4th and 5th Graders are conducting research to learn more about our brain and how it functions.  They are posing questions, such as:  In what ways can intelligence be measured?  What is a savant and how is their world different from ours?  How can medicines affect our brain?  How would you compare our brains with those of animals?   How might our brain functions rely on our senses?  How might hypnosis be used in a medicinal manner?  How would brain surgery benefit a patient?

Parents, thank you for your support this first month of school.  I think we're all in the routine now and students know the expectations of my class.  Please continue to encourage your child to take responsibility for his or her own learning

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at Patrice.McEaddy@cobbk12.org
