5th Grade News from Longyear

Good Morning!

Next Tuesday the 5th grade will have the opportunity to attend a children's performance from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at the Cobb Energy Center.
Will be leaving at 10:45 and returning at 2:00 for dismissal. It is tradition in 5th grade that the students dress appropriately for the event. They have been instructed of the dress code and there were many groans and sighs of dismay! But anyway, we ask that the boys wear a collared shirt tucked into pants that aren't jeans or sweats! The girls should wear a skirt, dress or pants other than jeans or sweats. We do not intend for anyone to spend an extra money for this request so please contact us if there is a concern other than a disgruntled child.

Also, last night students in Mrs. Longyear's homeroom were asked to log in to a new educational website from the GM weblink notebook called Edmodo. Hopefully everyone was able to do so, if not they can try again on Thursday. It is an interactive and novel approach to communicating with me and also their classmates. It can be used for many educational puposes; Mrs. Delass has been using it for repsonse to literature for quite some time and her students really enjoy it! Please let me know if you have any questions about it.

Just a reminder that Immigration poems are to be recited by Monday and Family Trees should be brought to school also.

I have contacted those responsible for bringing paper products so everyone esle who signed up to bring a food item for Immigration Day should do so on Tuesday. Students will report directly to "Ellis Island" aka, the gym, on Tuesday morning with all their belongings, just like the Immigrants! Please email me if you have any questions, I am checking email each morning.

We will be having our class Spelling Bee on Friday Morning.

Several students have not brought the science fair topic to be approved yet.
Our Luncheon is Friday at 12:35. We will have a very short activity in our classroom at 12:20.

Science Fair Project

Your child will be completing a science project this year, due on January 18th- No sooner and no later! A science fair project challenges a student to solve a question using the scientific method. It is a great way to excite children about science, teach them to think like scientists, develop their organizational skills, and enhance their writing skills.

I will be giving students handouts in class that explain the process of conducting a science fair project and guide them on their way. But the bulk of the students' work will be completed at home. I hope you will offer support and encouragement and monitor progress in the coming weeks. At the same time I ask that you keep in mind that the project is your child's responsibility. By limiting your involvement, your child will receive the full educational benefits that this project has to offer! It should also be noted that a successful project does not have to cost a lot of money. Some of the best projects can be completed using materials found around the home.

I will be giving planning guides and timelines for due dates on Wednesday and then going over the parts of the project little by little in the next week.

There are millions of ideas for projects on-line and I have books that students may also look at to get ideas for their project.

Just a reminder about Immigration Day.
Students will need to recite their poems by 11/29 and the Family Tree is due by 11/28.

Mrs. Longyear's Homeroom will have our Grandparents' and Special Friends' Luncheon on Friday 11/18 at 12:35. We invite you to visit our classroom at 12:20 before the luncheon.

There is no school on Tuesday!

All 5th graders will have a science quiz on Friday of this week. It will be on physical changes and proving that an object is the sum of its parts. All students have sample problems for parts of a whole in their science journal. We have been doing these problems weekly for three weeks!

If you have not yet returned your permission form for Immigration Day please do so even if you are not sending anything in so we can plan. Also, I need CRCT acknowledgement letters returned.

There will be club photos taken for the school's yearbook on the morning of Thursday, November 10th for any student who has participated in any after school club.

This may include: Chorus, Art club, Young Rembrandts, Odyssey of the Mind, Drama Club, Chess Club, Golf Club, Spanish Club, Cheer Dance, Club Scientific, Cub Scouts, Student Council, Wee Deliver, News Crew, Safety Patrol, etc. Please be sure to make your child aware of this activity which is strictly voluntary.
