5th Grade News from Longyear

The due date for turning in a baby picture of your child for the yearbook was Friday 10/28.

Please return the letter in your folder from conferences that states you are aware of CRCT being pass/fail in 5th grade. Some of you signed on the spot but, some did not. There is also a pink survey to complete!
Thank you all very much for coming to discuss your child at conferences, I think we are off to a great start!

What's happening in science?
We have started our study of Matter, Chapter 3 in the text book.
Already we have done some activities that "prove" that all matter is the sum of it parts and that some of those parts are too small to see. Currently, students are doing a tiny bit of research on an element from the Periodic Table. This will be all we will learn about the elements! Next week we will start to investigate physical changes, states of matter and mixtures.
I would like to do an activity on Wednesday that involves food. What I will need from each homeroom is the following:
a bag of pretzels, a box of cereal and a bag of mini marshmallows-
If you can contribute for your child's homeroom please email me with your item and what homeroom- I will confirm if we need that item in an email back to you.
Thank you for all you do at home to help me out in the classroom!

Science test Friday for Longyear and Hazlett

Students need pencils! It is very difficult to do school work without them and there are many days when a number of students do not have a pencil with them! I do not have the resources to supply pencils for the classes. Please make sure your child has the necessary tools for school! Thank you!

Conference times and dates are being sent home today, Monday 10/10. Please return them ASAP so the schedule can be finalized. If you cannot make your time please give me an alternative.

If anyone from Longyear Homeroom has a preference for conference times, please let me know via email ASAP. I have already heard from some of you, thanks!

There will be a end of unit science assessment on Tuesday 10/11 for Mrs. DeLass and Mrs. Brindley's homerooms. Longyear and Hazlett will be on Friday 10/14. They are on different days due to IOWA testing and our schedule will be slightly altered. Students will be given a study guide and MUCH review will take place. The assessment will be all multiple choice.

WOW! What an amazing trip we had last week! The students were so well behaved and I hope they told you all about their experience! We did it all- swam with dolphins, caught jellyfish and crabs, saw erosion and deposition, found sand dollars, held snakes and turtles, sang songs, learned valuable life lessons and made lasting memories. I learned so much about my students and I am looking forward to the spending the rest of the year learning and growing with them. We are back to the classroom on Monday!

We will be reviewing on Monday and Tuesday important concepts about earthquakes and volcanoes. We will then focus on information that was learned at Driftwood- barrier islands, beach restoration and then dams and levees. We will be ending our study of constructive and destructive forces by Friday 10/7- Chapter 2 lesson 4 is were we are in the book. There will be an end of the unit test the week of 10/10 date will be determined soon-

A BIG shout out to all our amazing dad chaperones! You were fantastic during our trip and I cannot thank you enough. Our students were lucky to have you! Thank you for giving up your time to help the 5th graders learn and grow!
