Happy Mother's Day

I hope all the moms enjoyed their special day today and your children were on their extra special good behavior!

Although the parents are not invited to attend the 5th grade picnic, I wanted to let you know the date has changed.

It has been moved to Wednesday, May 21st at lunch time. There is no cost for the children for lunch that day. Mr. Lane will be making hamburgers and hot dogs and Mrs. Wilson is providing soft drinks and ice cream!

1960's

We do not have very much 60's memorabilia. If you can muster up anything we would love to have it! The kids are really working hard to make the show really groovy!

First, I want to congratulate our entire class for either 'meeting' or 'exceeding' expectations on the 5th grade writing test! I knew they would and I am so proud. Now bring on the next test, we are ready!

Speaking of the next test, it starts on Wednesday just in case you have been on the other side of the world!

Dress Code

***As the weather gets warmer, here is a reminder of the school guidelines for dress code- no midriffs showing, no spaghetti strap tops, no tank tops, shorts and skirt length- students must be able stand up straight and be  able to have fingertips touch the hem and no flip flops (Crocs are fine).

If a student is in violation of the dress code, he/she will be sent to the office to speak with administration and will either be given clothes from the clinic or required to call home. Please double check their attire before they leave home!

Science Test, Projects and Important Dates

Just a reminder that the science test is this Thursday and all Think-Tac-Toe projects are due Friday. If  you are building a volcano to explode, we will do that on Friday. We have plenty of supplies to make the explosions spectacular!

We will be extending Social Studies for a couple days after spring break; too much information and too little time.

Dates to remember:

CRCT: 4/23-25 and 4/28-29 (make ups on 4/30)

May 1- Tie-Dye Day

May 2- Career Day

May 5th Parent's Night at Mabry and Target Medival Feast

May 6th- 5th grade field trip to Mabry

May 7th- 5th grade field trip to Chattanooga- Please send money and permission slips ASAP

Decade Days- 5/27 and 28 (more info to come)

That's enough for now!

Fifthgradeitis

This is the time of year when everyone gets a little or a lot of spring fever. The worst part is that this is really the most critical time in 5th grade! Please help me, to help your child keep their eye on the prize! I promise if they work hard we will enjoy the last 4 weeks of school and really make some lasting memories!

This is what we need to focus on:

Reading: We are working on reading books that go with out science unit. There will be a total of 6 books and 6 reports on each book. There are other activities that will be completed and turned in with the folder at the end of the unit. They have a check list to keep organized!

Science:  A 'Think-Tac-Toe" activity sheet on Volcanoes has been given out. The grading requirements are at the top of the page. The students need to do one activity from each ROW. It does not need to make a "Tic Tac Toe"  These projects are due by April 4th, but can be brought in anytime. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The test for this science unit will be Thursday, April 3rd. We will have started Social Studies already, but since we are also doing science in reading I wanted to give them the extra time to study and take in as much information as possible.

Mrs. Longyear's Math Class

Math classes will remain as they are for the rest of the year. We will finish up our unit on Geometry next week and then begin measurement. There will be a Geometry test on Friday. This will include area, perimeter and volume as well as geometry vocabulary and figures. Please memorize the formulas!

We will also spend some time reviewing key concepts for the CRCT. Please make use of the CRCT practice on-line at home.

A combination lock will be coming home with your child in the next few weeks. They will need to practice unlocking it and show me in the morning that they can do it! This skill will be invaluable next year!

After CRCT we will be having a fun day outside to Tye-Dye t-shirts. I will send a letter in a week or so, but all students will need to bring in a plain white and already washed t-shirt to tye-dye. These shirts will come in very handy when do our 60's decade day the last week of school!
