Today was a very trying day. Only a few of my precious ones wanted to learn. Others were not focusing on learning. As I tell them, it is my job to teach and it is their job to learn. I can only present the information in an interesting manner. They have to apply their self-control in order to listen and focus on their task.
I awarded many Dojo points for students following directions, being respectful while I was giving information or instruction, and students who were working hard. Unfortunately, I had to take many Dojo points away due students talking over me, students not listening (which made me repeat given directions several times), students out of their seats, and students who were not on task.
There will be many assessments until the end of this nine weeks. I need them to show me their best! They have learned so very much already this year. I want them to show it! Please speak with your student and make sure to check Class Dojo. I really appreciate your support.
(Completely off the subject: I will introduce addition and subtraction strategies next nine weeks. Those strategies include number line, partial sums, and base ten blocks. Right now students are working on mental strategies of addition and subtractions. You can find those in the handbook given out at Open House. Also, students aren't just learning how to count money, they are expected to KNOW the value of the coins (dimes, nickels, and pennies) and apply that in a word problem. When I first introduced each coin, we used manipulatives. We used them to make various amounts to 20 in different ways. We have finished the basic introduction and are now applying the knowledge.
I will be assessing one-step word problems with addition and subtraction to 20 and one-step word problems using money to 20¢ AFTER the break. I would suggest you keep those standards fresh in your students working memory while out next week.)
I do appreciate you all so much. I LOVE these precious children I have the privilege to call my students!
