Field Trip on December 6th to the Symphony

The fifth grade will be traveling to the Cobb Energy Center (Cumberland) to see the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We will leave at 10:45am and return to the school at 2pm.

The students will eat lunch at school around 10am before we leave.

DRESS CODE:

Young Ladies....Dress pants or skirt or dress. Comfortable shoes.

Young Men....Nice pants, collared shirt tucked in, nice shoes.

POST TEST DATE for Math = MONDAY 12/19/11

The 5th grade 2nd Nine Weeks Post Test will be given on Monday the 19th of December. The school wide Spelling Bee will be held at 9:15 am on Tuesday the 20th.

2nd Nine Week Standards

The Post Test for the 2nd nine weeks will be Monday 12/20. We have studied Fractions and are into Multiplying and Dividing Fractions now. We have started parts of the Data section also as a review through other subjects of study. This is a difficult area for students in fifth grade. We will review fractions continuously throughout the entire year.

Please continue to use the Skills Tutor at Home. Most students are finishing up the assignments posted there. Individual assignments will follow when all students have completed the first round.

 Fractions

• Find equivalent fractions and simplify fractions
• Compare fractions and justify the comparison
• Add and subtract common fractions with unlike denominators
• Find common denominators using different models
• Use fractions and decimals interchangeably

 Multiplication and Division of Fractions

• Estimate products and quotients
• Understand division of whole numbers can be represented as fraction (a/b = a ÷ b)
• Model the multiplication and division of common fractions

• Use variables to represent unknown quantities in algebraic expressions
• Substitute of numbers for the unknown in simple  algebraic expressions

  Data

• Analyze data presented in a graph
• Compare and contrast multiple graphic representations (circle graphs, line graphs, bar graphs, line plot, Venn diagrams, pictographs) for a single set of data
• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each
• Collect, organize, and display data using the most appropriate graph
• Determine the mean, mode, range and median of a set of data
• Apply percents to circle graphs

Social Studies/Language Arts Info. (Immigration Day)

November 26

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and got to spend some valuable time with family and friends.  It's back to business on Monday at Garrison Mill.

Reminder - Immigration Day on Tuesday.  Students should come dressed, but can bring a change of clothes for after the simulation.  Please send food items in that morning with the students.  Any paper products or water can be sent in on Monday.  Family trees are due Monday and students should be ready to recite their poems on Tuesday.  Many students have already completed their poem recitation.

Social Studies - students will be choosing their unit assessment for industrialization/immigration on Monday.  We will be working in the computer lab this week for those students that choose the performance task.  Any student that chooses the test will have review sessions this week. 

Reading and ELA - we will begin the book "Out of the Dust" as a group this week.  Students will also be working on informational writing.

SOCIAL STUDIES REMINDERS: Mrs. DeLass will Blog pertinent information on the 5th grade Ellis Island Simulation Day.

Poem is to be memorized and orally delivered individually to a teacher on November 29th during the Immigration Day.

Family Trees are to be done and in school on November 28th per Mrs. DeLass.

Please come to school dressed on the 29th in your immigration clothing. You may bring clothes to change into after the morning festivities for the remainder of the day if you choose.

SCIENCE CLASS COMMUNICATION: Please check into Mrs. Longyear's BLOG for all science communication needed.

 

Skills Tutor Server Down/Date Changed for Fractions

Parents,

The server is down for Skills Tutor, so the deadline will not be met. I will take the students to the LAB in SCHOOL when it comes back up.

Please remember that SKills Tutor is NOT a Mastery program designed to grade students unless a final assessment is assigned in school. AT HOME it is always a formative assessemnt meant for use in designing an individual assessemnt for each child for future use towards mastery. SO... again....never worth panic.

EVENTS - Club Pictures/Thanksgiving Lunch/Spelling Bee

Parents,

There will be club photos taken for the school's yearbook on the morning of Thursday, November 10th for any student who has participated in any after school club.

This may include:   Chorus, Art club, Young Rembrandts, Odyssey of the Mind, Drama Club, Chess Club, Golf Club, Spanish Club, Cheer Dance, Club Scientific, Cub Scouts, Student Council, Wee Deliver, News Crew, Safety Patrol, etc. Please be sure to make your child aware of this activity which is strictly voluntary.

Mrs. Hazlett and Mrs. Nelson's In Class Spelling Bee will be held on Friday 11th. It is not mandatory participation. Only students who would like to try out for the school wide Spelling Bee participate in the class Spelling Bee.

THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON - PLEASE BE IN THE ROOM AT 12 NOON for a small open house and we will proceed to the cafeteria together. PLEASE MAKE RESERVATIONS A.S.A.P (blue slips were in Thursday Folders) even though you can pay at the door.

Please let us know by email if your child will be flying solo that day so we can sit with them or make arrangements for them to join another family.

 

Skills Tutor Expected Use! Homework hints.

Just returned from further training with Skills Tutor. It is a phenomenal program.

ALL STUDENTS MUST login and try to complete the Fractions Assignment by Nov. 8th

ALSO - The timer on Fact Fluency has been changed to 7 minutes for the students to take their timed PRE-TESTS. This must be done by DEC. 1st. We collect Data every six weeks. The PRE-TESTS will allow individualized lessons for the future involving only the areas of weaknesses for each student.

PLEASE remember that this is not a GRADE but a means of collecting data of weakness areas so that individual instruction can be planned for in class and then individulaized practice sessions can be assigned through skills tutor. MASTERY is not expected.

ALSO...HOMEWORK mastery is not expected, nor should it be a point of stress. It is a process by which either practice is sustained, or it is a process by which we see who needs more help, or it is a process by which we differentiate the next assignment for the day... depending on the needs of the students.
