Standards for First Nine Weeks - Test October 14th

We have acclimated to expectations and have a clear understanding of how progress reports work. Parent communication has been wonderful and is always welcome. Report cards for the nine weeks will be given at conference time in October.

Students are completing the last of the nine week standards in the next two weeks (multiplication and division of decimals) and will then be tested on Friday October 14th for the entire Nine Week Period. A Mixed Review is part of homework daily and is also done in class, so cumulative knowledge and application is always an expectation. We will always go back and review prior standards.

To study please use the workbook pages completed, the textbook online or carried home, journal notes or online links.

The standards are as follows for the nine week period:

M5N1 Number and Operations: Whole Numbers

Students will further develop their understanding of whole numbers.

Element: M5N1.a

Classify the set of counting numbers into subsets with distinguishing characteristics (odd/even, prime/composite).

Element: M5N1.b

Find multiples and factors.

Element: M5N1.c

Analyze and use divisibility rules.

Element M5N2 Number and Operations: Decimals

Students will further develop their understanding of decimal fractions as part of the base-ten number system.

Element: M5N2.a

Understand place value.

Element: M5N2.b

Analyze the effect on the product when a number is multiplied by 10, 100, 1000, 0.1, and 0.01.

Element: M5N2.c

Use <,>, or = to compare decimals and justify the comparison.

 

 

 

M5N3 Number and Operations: Decimals/Multiplication and Division

Students will further develop their understanding of the meaning of multiplication and division with decimal fractions and use them.

Element: M5N3.a

Model multiplication and division of decimals.

Element: M5N3.b

Explain the process of multiplication and division, including situations in which the multiplier and divisor are both whole numbers and decimals.

Element: M5N3.c

Multiply and divide with decimals including decimal less than one and greater than one.

Element: M5N3.d

Understand that the relationships and rules for multiplication and division of whole numbers also apply to decimals.

 

 

Skills Tutor Available from Home as of 9/25/11

Skills Tutor is a program provided by Cobb County as a means of support for practice and remediation of skills students are expected to master by state standards. ALL MATH CLASSES are now up and running and are named as follows:

Hazlett/Math

Longyear/Math

DeLass/Math

Brindley/Math

Please be sure to go to the class that is listed as above for the math sections, because homeroom teachers can assign other subject areas through their own class names.

PLEASE Login and complete ONLY the FACT PRACTICE PORTION FIRST. ALL OF THE STUDENTS MUST COMPLETE ALL FOUR PRACTICE AREAS (addition,subtraction,multiplication and division) prior to parent conferences. So...Let's be sure it is done by October 18th.

I will check the data regularly. Students will also be assigned classwork/lab work and homework through the skills tutor at times.Assignments can be individualized for students by the teacher and will be when basic data is completed.

Progress Reports and Grades/Online Support for Tutoring

• Math Grades will be printed off in hard copy and placed in Thursday Folders on the 22nd with a parent signature required.
• Math Portfolios may be shared with a parent at anytime by the child. All they need to do is take the papers out of their box and then return them. They also work in their journals, practice workbooks and out of the textbook at times.
• The WEBLINK NOTEBOOK is on the Garrison Mill Homepage as a link under Student Links. The MATH section is very helpful. Students have login sheets in their agendas.
• Tutoring is available on www.mathplaygound.com if you click on Math Videos. It will provide direct instruction for any needed reteaching of the class lessons.
• Math Fact Practice is important for fluency of problem solving.

Homework should still be completed by students and not parents. Parents are more than welcome to tutor their own child, however this is often confusing for the students. So, please be sure to listen carefully to the child as to their understanding of what is taught in school. Any strategy the student feels comfortable with is acceptable. We are looking for the student's thinking process and connections.

On Wednesday I attended training for the Common Core Standards. The PROCESS and COMMUNICATION STANDARDS are the expectation for the students.
