Newsletter October 3-7

I can't believe I am writing a newsletter for October.  This is such a fun and exciting time of the year!  We have sooooo much going on in the classroom.  It will be winter break before we know it. 

As you noticed ;), Mrs Rodgers will be leaving us in just a few weeks to have baby Rodgers.  We are in the process of interviewing some wonderful supply teachers.  I will update you when Mr Giesler has made his final decision (yes, Mrs Rodgers is coming back :)

Mrs Harrison will be out of the classroom on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (October 5,6,7).  Please make sure to send emails/notes to Mrs Rodgers.    Also,a blog WILL NOT go out on Friday (10/7).  Thanks for your help with this situation.

Nuts and Bolts:

THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers.  We appreciate all the help during Literacy Centers.  During Literacy Centers, we are able to work with the students in small group(s).  We are working on our pre-reading skills (one to one correspondence, tracking the text left to right and top to bottom, looking for our sight words etc).

Please continue working on sight words at home.  We have COMPLETED the red words......now on to the Orange words.  We will begin assessing your child on his/her words SOON!!!!!

It can be CHILLY in the classroom.  Please feel free to send in a coat/sweatshirt for your child to wear during the day.

Thank you for allowing your child to walk to the classroom in the am.  This is extremely helpful to the teachers and students.

REMEMBER conferences are October 24-28:  Conferences start at 12:40 each day.  Your day/time will be sent home soon.

Writing:  Writing All about Me (drawing pictures to match the sentnece and adding detail/background to pictures)

Shared Readding:  Making predictions using the title and cover page of a book

Poems.....Poems.....Poems

Hello Parents,

Throughout the school year we will learn many poems in the classroom.  We will send home a copy of the poem for you to review with your child at home. 

What can your child do with the poem?

*read at home with a parent-(the poem should be a familiar text....memorization is awesome)

*point to the words-(tracking the text for 1 to 1 correspondence)

*sing the poem to the family

We are trying to build confidence in reading this year.  Please use the poems and little readers we send home as a great home/school connection.  It is perfectly fine they have memorized the text at this level......it is a stepping stone to reading.

It is hard to believe we are 4 weeks into the school year.  I hope everyone is adjusting to Kindergarten (parents included) :)  We love seeing happy faces in the morning and throughout the day. 

What is happening in the classroom?

Words of the Week:  am & up

Math:  Sort and Classify

Writing Workshop:  Writing about "Me"

Social Studies:  What is Labor Day?  Identifying the American Flag/Georgia Flag  What is the Pledge of Allegiance/why do we say it?

Handwriting:  Formal handwriting will start this week.  Please help your child write letters the correct way.  Also, make sure your child is holding a pencil the correct way.  This is a hard habit to break......it takes lots and lots of reminder :)

Sound/Letter of the Week/Handwriting:  Aa (short and long)

Shared Reading:  Why do we reread favorite books?  Why do we read everyday?  Demonstrate that reading is FUN!  We read to learn new things.  Share and discuss book choices.

What is happening at Garrison Mill?

Monday, September 12th-Reading Night 6-8 and Foundation Meeting at 7pm

Tuesday, September 13th-Spirit Night 5-8pm at South of the Border and Paradise Grille

Friday, September 16th-Picture Day, Fun Run starting at 5pm, QSP ends and Movie Night

Happy September to you and your family!  We had a busy week at school learning new lessons and working on good school behavior.  We appreciate all that ya'll (yes, we are southerners...this is a word in our classroom) do to help with this process :)

Garrison Mill has a schoolwide goal for math.  Each grade level has a certain skill to meet by the end of the year.  In Kindergarten, we want each child to write his/her numbers 0-30 unassisted.  So, you will see papers coming home throughout the year that shows your child's progression with the skill.  Please help us by reinforcing this number recognition at home.
