Come join us in the Media Center this evening, May 4th, from 6-8 PM for another Garrison Mill Reading Night. We hope to see you there!
The media center will be open from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 2nd for a Reading Night. Students must be accompanied by a parent and are able to take Accelerated Reader tests or work on research projects. There will be 1 more Reading Night before the end of the school year.
Monday March 2nd is also Read Across America Day and is the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Our students will be doing quite a bit of reading on that day while wearing pajamas. We are also going to have some Lassiter students come to Garrison Mill that morning to read to our students. They will be in the building between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.
Parents are welcome to check out books from our media center. Please come by and your name will be entered into the system and you may check out up to 5 books at a time. You must be present to check out books. Your child will not be allowed to check out books in your name if you are not present.
If you are reading to a class of students, please feel free to call the media center and ask for help with choosing a book to read. Please don't leave a voice mail message; calling back would probably be a better choice. Also, if you would like to come by before reading, you are always welcome.
As always, many thanks to Sarah Marton and all the media center volunteers. These ladies make all things possible - without their assistance, our media center would not operate as smoothly as it does each and every day.
READING NIGHTS
The January Reading Night was a great success!! We had so many parents and students in the media center to read and take Accelerated Reader tests.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, February 5th. The media center will be open that night for another Reading Night in conjunction with our Curriculum Night. We will have lots of books ready and all of our computers will be on and ready to go. You may also feel free to use any resource for research purposes as well.
Conference Week is scheduled for January 23rd - 27th. All students will be dismissed at 12:20 every day. The media center will be used by the ASP program during the afternoon. You will not be able to leave your child in the media center during your conference time.
As always, many thanks to our media center volunteers!! I am envied by many media specialists in this county because of our volunteer force!! I really don't know what Debbie and I would do without each and every one of you.
Our Garrison Mill book fair was a huge success!! The money from the book fair will be used to buy laminating film for our teaching staff and new books, videos, and Accelerated Quizzes for our students.
Speaking of Accelerated Reader, many new A/R quizzes have been added to our computers at school as well as on our website. Please click on Accelerated Reader and Quiz List Interactive will come up on your screen . You can search for list by reading level, points, title, author, and subject. It is possible to print a list of books for your child and then have your child come to our media center and select a book from the list to check out.
Please note that a featured list of our newest quizzes can be found on Quiz List Interactive.
Mark your calendar for Monday, January 12th. There will be a Reading Night in the media center from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. All students are welcome to come with their parent to read and take A/R quizzes.
As always, thanks to Sarah Marton for the terrific job she has done in organizing media center volunteers for this school year.
A huge thank you to all our media center volunteers!!!! What in the world would the Garrison Mill media center do without you????????????

This year we have an extra attraction during our book fair. A portion of our media center will showcase many military items from World War I, World War II, the Viet Nam War, and the Gulf War. This display is in honor of all Veterans who have served our country. Please try to find a moment to come by and take a look.
As always, a big thank you to all the volunteers who make our media center function so beautifully. Mrs. Dempsey and Mrs. Haas appreciate you very, very much!!!!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday.
Many thanks to our super media center volunteers. Garrison Mill is very lucky to have each and every one of you. Please call the media center if you cannot come in when you are scheduled. If a substitute is needed, Debbie or I will contact Sarah Marton.
The media center has received a $235.00 mini-grant from the Garrison Mill PTA. These funds will be used to purchase Literacy Skills quizzes. Literacy skills quizzes are a special feature of Accelerated Reader. The student first takes the Reading Practice test, then takes the literacy quiz. The literacy quizzes monitor growth in four in-depth categories. These catagories are constructing meaning, inferential comprehension, literary analysis, and initial understanding. The literacy quizzes are designed to be used with our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. Each test consists of 20 very detailed questions that make sure our students truly understand the book. Many thanks to our PTA for the mini grant!!
We have just received 3 copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Rules. We will be ordering accelerated reader tests for these books very soon.
If your child would like to have a particular book and it is checked out, we can put a hold on the book at the request of the student. Then, when the book is checked in, the library circulation program let us know that there is a hold on the book. We then let your child know the book is here and can be picked up in the media center.
Remember, the media center opens at 7:25 a.m. each morning and closes each day at 2:20 p.m. Please call if you have questions at 770-642-5600 ext. 229.
The media center is open from 7:25 a.m. until 2:20 p.m. every day that students are in school. It is closed for teacher in-service and workdays. The media center is not open after school for Accelerated Reading testing.
Books are checked out to students for 10 school days. After that time, overdue notices are sent to students. Elementary schools do not charge fines for late books. If you child loses a book or the book is damaged beyond repair, please call the media center. You will be given the cost of the book. If the book has been lost and then is found at a later date, your money will be refunded.
Our next Reading Night will be Monday, October 27th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Students may come with their parents to take Accelerated Reading tests, read, or use the media center computers for research purposes.
The media center is the hub of our school. It is a busy place with students and teachers in and out all day. If you would like to volunteer in the media center, please contact Sarah Marton at sarahmart@bellsouth.net.
Parents are always welcome in the media center. Mrs. Dempsey, our media paraprofessional, and I are always glad to help in any way that we can.
