Wow, tomorrow is December!  Do you realize we are almost half way through 5th grade?  We had another wonderful "Immigration Day" on Tuesday.  Students came in great costumes and the food was superb!  Family trees are hanging in the hallways.  We have enjoyed learning about your ancestors.  We thank all of those that contributed items or helped throughout the day.  A new photo album on our Shutterfly account has been started.  If you took any pictures on Tuesday, please add them to the existing Immigration album.  We can't wait to see them all.  As a reminder, the shutterfly account is:

Please remember to send in cans and other items that were included on the list for our food drive for Must Ministries.  We are trying to make this food drive the most successful ever.

IMPORTANT*** All 5th graders will have the opportunity to enjoy the Atlanta Symphony next Tuesday.  Students will have a sack lunch prior to leaving for the symphony.  We request that all students dress appropriately to represent Garrison Mill at this event.  This means - boys:  No t-shirts or sweatshirts.  No jeans, shorts, or sweatpants.  No shirt with writing on it. Please wear collared shirts, with khakis or dress pants. Girls - dress pants, skirt or dress.  Students have been instructed "church" attire is best. 

Reminder:  Reflection winners reception Thursday night, December 1st at 6:00.  Hope everyone can attend. 

 

November 26

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and got to spend some valuable time with family and friends.  It's back to business on Monday at Garrison Mill.

Reminder - Immigration Day on Tuesday.  Students should come dressed, but can bring a change of clothes for after the simulation.  Please send food items in that morning with the students.  Any paper products or water can be sent in on Monday.  Family trees are due Monday and students should be ready to recite their poems on Tuesday.  Many students have already completed their poem recitation.

Social Studies - students will be choosing their unit assessment for industrialization/immigration on Monday.  We will be working in the computer lab this week for those students that choose the performance task.  Any student that chooses the test will have review sessions this week. 

Reading and ELA - we will begin the book "Out of the Dust" as a group this week.  Students will also be working on informational writing.

The quilt is now pieced.  Hopefully I will get the backing attached tomorrow so student contributors can begin to put a "tie" in the quilt near their square.  I would like to thank all those that contributed a fabric square.  I know that the neo-natal unit at Northside Hospital is very excited about this quilt.  I will take a picture and place it on the blog when it is complete.

Parents,

There will be club photos taken for the school's yearbook on the morning of Thursday, November 10th for any student who has participated in any after school club.

This may include:   Chorus, Art club, Young Rembrandts, Odyssey of the Mind, Drama Club, Chess Club, Golf Club, Spanish Club, Cheer Dance, Club Scientific, Cub Scouts, Student Council, Wee Deliver, News Crew, Safety Patrol, etc. Please be sure to make your child aware of this activity which is strictly voluntary.

Reminders will be sent home in the Thursday communication folders this week regarding the Ellis Island simulation donations.  Students should be actively working on their family tree and the memorization of the poem.  Family trees are due Monday, November 28th.  All students should be ready to recite their poem by November 29th.  There are a few students in each class that have not yet returned the parent signature form regarding Immigration Day and the above mentioned assignments.

Students should come to school dressed on the 29th in their immigration clothing. They may bring clothes to change into after the morning festivities for the remainder of the day if they choose.

Spelling assessment next Monday, November 14th.  Student spelling words can be found in their agendas.
