Dear Parents,
It has been a great two weeks getting to know your students. We are learning a lot about them through their reading letters and writing. We have begun to integrate social studies into reading daily. All students have a book pertaining to the Civil War that they are reading. They must keep up on their daily reading, as we will be completing these books within a months' time. The students are currently discussing the books with their classmates on an education website called "edmodo". I LOVE this site! This social education site has encouraged interesting book discussions, almost like book clubs, among the students. I have never seen such enthusiasm for reading and discussing books. I certainly hopes this continues. The students do have critical thinking questions that they must answer at the end of each week. These questions will be the basis of our classroom discussions. The primary purpose of the Civil War books is to provide additional background knowledge about this time period in an interesting way.
Please continue math facts practice with your children. These week we are focusing on getting all students to master the addition facts at 96% or above. If your child has achieved this goal, they do not have a nightly computation sheet this week. We will concentrate on subtraction next week.
Be sure to check both Mrs. Hazlett's and Mrs. Longyear's blogs for additional math and science information.
Driftwood news - an important letter is coming on in this week's Thursday folder. If you inadvertently paid $180 instead of $185, please send in the additional $5 as soon as you can. Remember to mark your calendar for the MANDATORY parent meeting on September 22nd, 6:30 pm in the media center.
Please be checking through all materials sent home in the Thursday communication folders with your children each week. By taking time to do this, it will reinforce to the students that education is important. We appreciate your continued support. Have a great week.
Mrs. DeLass and Mr. McGill
