Hope you all are having a great week! Just wanted to send out a quick curriculum update and a few reminders for this week and next.
*Book Reports are due tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing all the creative projects the kids have been working on!
*Our class is going to the Federal Reserve Bank on October 26th. A field trip permission form was sent home yesterday. Please return this as soon as possible. :) If your child chooses to opt out, he/she will be sent to another 4th grade classroom to spend the day in.
*Fall Festival is next Friday, October 9th. They are looking for volunteers to bake tasty treats to sell. They would like all treats individually packaged and labeled ready for sale on Friday, October 9th. They would like you to drop all baked goods on the cart in the lobby by 12:00 pm that day. Please contact Nina Lempert at firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions. I’ll also be sending home information about the raffle and tickets soon.
*Pajama/Stuffed Animal was a huge success! The kids had a blast today. We are working on earning our next 15 compliments… we will see what they pick for the next celebration day.
*Conference Week is coming up soon! We will be holding conferences the week of October 19th. Letters will be going home this Friday about a particular time. If it doesn’t work with your schedule, please let me know and we can arrange for another time. If you are unable to come in, I’d be happy to hold a phone conference as well.
Math- We are continuing to work on multiplication and division word problems and properties. We will also be working on factors and multiples this week. The extension group will be turning in their projects the last day of the grading period next Friday, October 9th. We will also be taking the timed tests (50 problems in 2 minutes and 30 seconds) next week in all operations including: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I have seen so much improvement in the last few practice timed tests we’ve done!! Way to go!! Thanks for supporting your children at home and allowing them to practice those math facts! We will see how they do on the tests next week, and we will plot our progress on the graphs in our math journals.
ELA- We are working on spelling sort 7 this week. Remember spelling journals are due Friday and the test is also Friday. Please make sure your child is completing all of the spelling choosies neatly and accurately for homework. In writing, we are continuing to work on our narratives, and we are talking about the qualities of realistic fiction. In reading, we are doing our guided reading groups with all of us reading different leveled non-fiction stories on Native Americans. We are learning how to find the evidence in the text to support all of our answers.
Social Studies- We have finished our unit on maps, and we are working on learning about the 6 different Native American tribes including: Inuit, Kwakiutl, Nez Perce, Plains, Seminole, and Hopi. The kids have to know where these tribes were located, what type of food they ate, what type of clothing they wore, and what type of shelter they lived in. I have been teaching the kids HOW to actually study for a test. We have been making note cards in class, and they know they should be studying a little bit every night using their social studies journals and their note cards. They should also be creating more notecards for each tribe at home as we learn about them in class.
Have a great week! As always, e-mail me with any questions!
