World War II

Parents,

We began our unit on World War II today! The students will be doing some independent reading as well as our in class lessons. My homeroom has been assigned a novel based on World War II. The book may go on their reading log since they will be doing it on their own time. They must take the end of book test on or before February 21.

You may look at what we are studying in their journal and their text book. It is a very information packed unit!

In writing, we are continuing to write persuasive essays. Expect to see one in the next few days!

Parent Workshop

There will be a parent workshop sponsored by the GM Counseling Department and PTA on Friday, February 3 at 9:30 AM in the GM PTA Room. The topic will be "Tween Talk"- Dealing with minds, bodies, emotions, independence and discipline. The speaker will be Jennifer Vann

Greyhound Gala

Dear Parents,

I just wanted to let you know that, as a gala auction item, Ms. Longyear, Ms. Ofiara, and I are offering a "Scrapbook Party."

This will be for the auction winner plus 3 guests. Bring pictures and basic scrapbook supplies and we will create beautiful memories. Snack provided.  Approximately 2 hours of fun in the classroom after school.  Date and time to be worked out between teachers and parents.

The Gala Auction will be held February 4, 2012 at Olde Towne Athletic Club from 7 to 11 PM. Tickets are on sale at http://gmefoundation.org - $35 and $45 at the door or you can Download 2012GALATicketformto purchase tickets in advance. Visit the website for a sample of items to bid on. All proceeds go back to GMEF.

The proceeds will be used to improve our school by providing funding for programs such as technology, educational curriculum and facility improvements. The GMEF will accumulate and distribute resources beyond those provided by Cobb County or the PTA, in order to further enhance, foster and enrich the educational experiences of all students at Garrison Mill.

Science Fair

Science Fair Project

Dear Parents,

It was such a pleasure to witness the amount of knowledge the students gained through the learning process while completing their science fair projects. The students clearly demonstrated a thorough understanding of the scientific process and science inquiry standards. We are blessed to have parental support of this process. We would like to thank Mrs. Haas in the Media Center for giving up her space for two days and the independent judges from Lasstier Science Honor Society who spent hours judging the projects. Students will be given their rubric back on Monday.

IMMUNIZATIONS

Parents,

I just got an updated list of the students who need updated immunizations for middle school. The majority of the class needs to have an updated Varicella immunization. If you haven't turned in an immunization record to the office since Kindergarten, your child probably will need an updated form before they can register for middle school. Please send me the updated form as soon as you get it, so I can register them at Mabry! Thanks.

Hero Essay

The forms came home for the Hero Essay yesterday. It is mandatory for the students to do this. When they finish their paper, they need to turn it in with the cover sheet attached. I hope we can have some winners! Papers are due February 24th!

Welcome Back!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful break! I had such a great time with my family. Thank you again for all of the wonderful gifts. It is so nice that you thought of me over the holidays!

We are ready to get started for a big 2012! In English we will finish up the parts of speech and begin persuasive writing. In reading, we will be working on some more fiction and nonfiction reading strategies. Social Studies will find us moving into the 20s and 30s! We will be busy!

Just a reminder to those of you who did not bring classroom supplies such as tissues, clorox wipes and paper towels at the beginning of the year -we are running out. As stated on the supply list in the fall, the girls should have brought them in August, which would leave the boys to bring in the supplies now.  Paper towels, wipes, tissues and bandaids are the supplies we could use. Thank you so much!

I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday and to begin the 3rd nine weeks!
