Important Information

End of the year celebration is Friday evening from 6:00-8:00.  I would personally like to invite all the fifth grade parents.  My "Hand Jive" group will be performing a special sign language tribute to all the parents.  They have been working diligently on this for the past few months and would love to have an audience and express our appreciation for our wonderful parents in a unique and touching way.

5th Grade picnic will be the 21st from 12:15 - 1pm. Students will have hamburgers and hot dogs compliments of Mrs. Wilson along with a soda and ice cream. If it rains it will be held in the covered play area. Parents usually do not participate in this event. It is simply an extra 15 minutes of socialization for the kids outdoors.

NOW SHOWING!!!

Last week I had the students read a play for Readers Theater. We are still working on poetry and figurative language which went right along with plays. The students did such an excellent job and some students even researched and wrote more parts. We decided that we needed to do this big! It is funny how they all remembered their parts from the Under the Sear program in Kindergarten!!

SO..

You are invited to come see Historical Hysteria on Friday at 9:30 in the cafeteria.

Come see how "Jenny" gets some help from the past!

Important Reminders

As we finish up the 3rd nine weeks, it is time for a few important reminders...

***Report cards will be coming home on Thursday. Make sure to look them over, discuss the gradese with your child, and return the signature card on Friday.

***As the weather gets warmer, here is a reminder of the school guidelines for dress code- no midriffs showing, no spaghetti strap tops, no tank tops, shorts and skirt length- students must be able stand up straight and be  able to have fingertips touch the hem and no flip flops (Crocs are fine).

If a student is in violation of the dress code, he/she will be sent to the office to speak with administration and will either be given clothes from the clinic or required to call home. Please double check their attire before they leave home!

***Reminder-please get an updated immunization form turned in to the office ASAP. We will soon begin preparing our students’ folders to send to Mabry and they can not be registered without the proper immunizations. Thanks.

***TARDIES****Tardies have become a HUGE problem at GM and could result in our school not making AYP!! Please always make the effort to get your child here on time! It is important for their education and for the school!

***Don't forget about the permission slip and the payment for the Chattanooga trip. We are very short on funds as of now. There are a few more weeks to get it turned in.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Have a great weekend.

Writing Assessment!

Alarm clock - Click image to download.Good afternoon.

Just a quick reminder about  Wednesday! The Georgia Writing Assessment will begin at 8:00. It is important that your child eat a good breakfast. The test is 3 hours long and no snack break is allowed during the test. Please also remind them to bring in some non mechanical pencils. We are out of pencils. They need to be responsible for their own supplies.

The students are very well prepared for the test, and I think they will do well assuming that they use their time wisely. A few have a tendency to finish in 15 minutes and then say they are done. There is no reason to rush since the test is 2 1/2 hours long. Remind them the importance of editing for better ideas, word choice, and sentence fluency!!

I look forward to seeing you Thursday night at Curriculum night. We will be focusing on math. Mr. McGill and I will be doing Promethean activities, Mrs. Hazlett will be working with laptops, and Mrs. Longyear and Mrs. DeLass will be working on Exemplars. This is a great time for you to come see what we do in class!!

Thanks for all your support.
Mrs. Brindley

News From Room 400

Hello there! I hope that everyone had a great 4 day weekend! We had a very prodcutive day today. This morning we met with other 5th grade teachers from several schools and got some great ideas on Performance Based Instruction and Differentiation for the upcoming units of study. This afternoon we spent in small group discussions with the 6th grade teachers at Mabry about their expectations for the upcoming students. They told us what a benefit it was that our students are switching classes this year! They said that transitioning and working to be organized is so helpful for next year. Being able to unlock a combination lock, although does not seem like a big issue, is one of their major concerns for the students. Having such a short break time between classes makes it vital that they know how to open a lock. I would highly recommend that they practice a lot!

One other transition point that I will be requiring from now on is their paper heading to be written on the top, left side of each assignment. It must include their first and last name and the date. Any assignment that they complete in another classroom must also have my name on it. After this week, they will have points counted off if they have not followed those directions. It is really important that as my expectations increase as the year goes on, that the students also step up their output. I am looking for good sentences, complete answers, capital letters and punctuation. None of these are new skills for the students, they just need to take  a little more pride in their work. We still have a lot of work to do before CRCT, some of which requires them to do some long strectches of independent seat work.  I am looking to see their best the next 12 weeks!!

The Electricity and Magnetsim unit will be wrapped up this week with a test on Friday. We will continue to do guided reading based on Science topics but our next unit of study will be on Destructive and Constructive forces of nature.

In Social Studies we will be starting a World War II unit which will coincide with a novel called Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes.  The students will be completing several performance based projects including the creation of a Video Quiz!

Please conitnue to refer to the February calendar that was sent home which includes a lot of important events such as the Six Hour Reading club, the Hero essay, and the Titanic projects. All of these have been ongoing assignments that will be due shortly.

Looking ahead to March...March 3rd, Read Across America day. It will be pajama day, so we can all be comfy and read! I will need 2 reading parents. I will just take the first 2 that respond with an interest.

March 4, Early Release

March 5th, VERY IMPORTANT......State Writing Test. Please make sure that your child is here on time and has had a great breakfast. Thanks in advance!!

As always, feel free to ask if you have any questions!
