Week Three

 We've had two great weeks! I've been amazed at how quickly the class has "settled in." Many thanks to you for having them ready to go!

Our units of study will not change this week. However, I will be giving a math test on Thursday or  Friday on place value. Therefore, our homework will look a little different this week. Please check agendas for homework assignments.

Additionally, I will give the multiplication and division timed pretests this week. Since the mastery of facts is a school goal, I am just setting baseline scores and really don't expect mastery at his point. Most students passed the addition timed test, but very few have mastered 90 to 100 facts in subtraction. I hope to have some practice packets ready this week to send home. The goal is just to improve a little each day.

Agenda Information

We have had a wonderful first week. Many thanks to all of you who came to Open House on Tuesday night and many thanks to all who volunteered to help us during the year.

As I mentioned on Tuesday night, my take-home folders will be sent home on Thursday of next week. However, I am sending home the High Touch-High Tech information home this evening in the agendas instead of holding it until next week. Note that there is a permission form on the back of the High Touch-HighTech information.

Oh the Places We'll Go

 
I enjoyed meeting all of you on Friday.  I am excited to begin a new school year and am reminded of the Dr. Suess title, Oh the Places You’ll Go.  I welcome you as partners on the journey.

Just as a reminder:   Open House for grades 3-5 is Tuesday Night, Aug. 16, from 6-8.  There will be only one classroom session. For those of you who need to be in another intermediate session, I will have handouts available for you and will be glad to meet with you at another time if you have additional questions.   PTA will begin their meeting at 6:00 in the cafeteria. The K-2 Open House is on Thursday night.

 Getting to know my students is my primary goal this week. There will be many interactive and fun activities as we work on building a classroom community of mutual respect and support for one another. I will begin some pre-assessments to determine where we are academically. I do not plan to assign homework this week.

Units of study for the first quarter:

Math: Place Value through ten thousand, addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Science: Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils

Social Studies: Roots of Democracy,  Map Skills,  Introduction of Famous Americans –Paul Revere

Language Arts: Reading Strategies and Narrative Writing combined with spelling and grammar lessons.

We will begin completing our agendas this week.  It will give you a brief overview of what we did during the day. Homework will be highlighted or written in green when it is assigned. (Remember: no homework this week.)

And Off We Go!

Greetings to all new students and parents. I'm excited about working with you this year. Hopefully, I will see all of you at Sneak-A-Peek on Friday Morning. I'm also looking forward to Open House on Tuesday evening. You'll have a glimpse into our year.

Monday morning will find me excited and ready for the 2011 and 2012 school year. I hope you have a restful weekend and find peaceful sleep on Sunday night! And...thank you so much for all of the supplies. They are much needed and appreciated.
