Our reading goal is 10,000 pages, not words. We are so very close, and I'll give you an update on Friday. We're looking forward to seeing you then.
We look forward to seeing all of you for Freaky Friday at 12:00. Please come early enough to enjoy the goodies at the Volunteer Brunch. This is Garrison Mill's thank you for all you do. The designated time for the brunch is 8:30-11:00. As our lunch begins at 11:09, you may wish to join your child for lunch.
Reading Night: Monday, 5/5. This is a great time (quiet and peaceful)to preview books with your child. By the way, our 10,000 word reading goal is within sight. We will enjoy our pizza party! We are so proud of their independent reading this nine weeks.
Mrs.Wilson's Retirement Party: 5/8, 5:00-6:00.
Great News!! CRCT is behind us, and the kids did a great job. The school will let you know when scores are in and available for pick-up.
Curriculum News:
Math-We will finish our study of decimals and begin multiplication of larger digits, utilizing the partial product method. Ex. 23 x 6 = 20x6 +3x6. As soon as students understand partial product, we will introduce multiplication with regrouping.
Language Arts: Reading, Spelling, and Language activities will continue. We will also concentrate on more practice with cursive writing. The kids are doing a great job and are pleased with their progress.
Science: The unit on heat will continue. We had some wonderful insulated containers for our ice on Friday. Tomorrow, we will write about the scientific process and conclusions.
Mystery Phrase: Partial Product
We had a great three days of testing last week. Thank you! Thank you! All kids were present, on time, well rested, and ready to go. They are doing a super job. We will have Science and Social Studies CRCT Tests on Monday and Tuesday. As you can imagine, our teaching time has been very brief each day. Regular scheduling will begin on Wednesday.
Here are just a few date reminders:
Thursday 5/1-PTA Meeting
Friday 5/2- Spirit Day
We are so excited about Freaky Friday-5/9. We hope you can also drop by on that day for the Garrison Mill's Volunteer Brunch....8:30-11:00. This event honors all of you who have donated your time and talents to our school. We appreciate what you do! Our Freaky Friday festivities will begin at 12:00 and end at 1:00. We look forward to seeing you.
Mystery Word: Decimal (This week we will begin adding and subtracting decimals. We will focus on reviewing area and perimeter during the first part of the week.)
Have a great week.
If you need to schedule a large item pick-up to be donated to the Foundation Garage Sale,
Please call Patti Lavender: 770-552-1162
We are planning to schedule pick-ups for Sunday afternoon, April 27th, but we may be able to make other arrangements.
We are all keeping our "smiley" faces on as we approach testing week. We begin with Reading on Wednesday, followed by Language Arts on Thursday, and Math on Friday. Thank you in advance for setting an appropriate bedtime and encouraging a healthy breakfast.
Testing will begin shortly after 8:00. Once our classroom door closes, late students must report to the media center until we complete section one of each test. We were thrilled that we had no absences or tardies during ITBS testing in the fall. Make-ups are very difficult because we are at the mercy of the test administrators and their schedules.
Our specials' schedule will change during testing, but our lunch schedule will remain the same.
Please remember that the Chic-Fil-A biscuit money is due on Friday, 4/25. $3.00 buys a chicken biscuit and a Sunny Delight. Please send cash only. Profits go to the American Cancer Society. The actual biscuit breakfast will be on Wednesday, April 30th at 7:25.
We hope you have marked your calendars for May 9th, Freaky Friday. We are so excited.
Mystery Word: Self-Confidence....We know our students are well prepared and ready to go!!!
Have a great week.
Garrison Mill has recently established a Foundation whose purpose is to provide resources above and beyond what the County and the Garrison Mill PTA is able to provide. Please visit their web page to find out more about who they are, what they do, and help support their first fundraising event. You can visit them at: GME Foundation.
Ready or not, tomorrow begins our last stretch of the 2007-2008 school year. It will be a fast but critical stretch. The two Jennifers will begin the week committed to the teaching of new concepts and reviewing the old.
CRCT testing begins on April 23rd and continues through the 29th. After giving a math review on the Friday before the holidays, we noticed that review is critical. We will discuss the concepts on Monday and send the papers home for corrections to be returned on Tuesday. There were several troublesome areas on the quiz: subtraction of larger numbers and across zeros, elapsed time, and simply reading word problems for pertinent information.Additionally, we are still trying to conclude timed tests: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Please help reinforce these skills at home.
In Science, we will be focusing on heat energy.
Language Arts will continue with guided reading in novel studies and new units in spelling and Mountain Language.
We look forward to seeing our "stars" tomorrow morning and hearing about our week apart. We hope all of you enjoyed the time off!
Mystery Word-Perimeter.
Hopefully, all of you are looking forward to spring break. (April 7-11) I know your children are! They have been working hard and deserve a rest. Have a wonderful time whatever you do!
The week at a glance:
Wednesday-4/2: Performing Arts Field Trip-Cobb County Civic Center. There are changes, lunch and PE. in our schedule.I will discuss these changes with the students.
Curriculum:
Language Arts: Reading Workshops will continue. The students are enjoying Winn Dixie and Stone Fox. Many vocabulary and comprehension activities accompany these texts.
I'm very pleased with the independent reading. We are logging the pages read as a class. Our goal is 10,000 pages. The reward is a pizza party.
Math: Linear measurement will continue. We will add metric measurement later in the week. Have students measure for you at home.
Science: Stop by and see the GA regions/habitats posters. They are very good. We will be reviewing the scientific process and beginning a unit on heat.
Mystery Word: Insulation
Have a great week. Look for the next post on Sunday , 4/13. Mark your calendar for CRCT testing, 4/23-4/29. We should be ready and rested.
We hope all of you have enjoyed this beautiful weekend. It's hard not to have spring fever.
Most of our units this week will carry over from last week. We will be reviewing fractions on Monday with a test assigned for Tuesday. Please continue to practice multiplication and division facts at home. If you need study sheets, let us know.
This last quarter our reading requirement is 490 pages. Thanks for helping your student keep up with the reading log. Independent reading is essential in becoming a good reader! This nine weeks, we are encouraging students to read AR books. Taking the AR tests is good practice for the CRCT. If the book is not an AR book, we have a book summary sheet available for completion.
The mystery word of the week is fraction.
Have a great week.
