Below are the optional projects for the 3rd grade Heart unit. Please encourage your child to consider choosing one and doing a fabulous, detailed job on it. Hopefully they will become enthused and enjoy their learning. Just a reminder - please let them do all of the project independently; this includes coming up with ideas and solving problems. Here are the options.
LINGUISTIC
1. Many scientists have devoted their life’s work to the study of the heart. Choose a scientist or other notable person whose contribution greatly impacted our understanding of the heart and/or the circulatory system. Prepare and deliver an informative speech of his/her life. You may wish to take on the role of this scientist and deliver the speech as the actual person.
2. Purple Heart: the Purple Heart is awarded to special people. Conduct research to find out to whom and why the Purple Heart is awarded. Present information about three recipients of the Purple Heart. Why is it called the Purple Heart?
3. Create a beautiful book of original poetry. You may choose a theme or you may include your original poems of all topics. Try to vary the style of poetry to highlight your creative side.
VISUAL-SPATIAL
4. Create a mobile featuring hand-made hearts and other shapes. Think about the balance necessary for the mobile to be stable. Use that idea to illustrate the importance of providing balance for your heart. For other shapes, include representations of items that are important to having a balanced, healthy heart.
5. For those artistes~~~~here’s an opportunity to show your artistic side! You have just been chosen to create a piece of art to be displayed at the grand opening of Hearts Galore, a store that sells nothing but hearts. Choose a medium (paint, clay, pencil, collage, etc.) to create a sculpture featuring hearts of all kinds and sizes.
MATHEMATICAL-LOGICAL
6. Create several multi-step math problems that deal with heart rates, pulse, and/or blood pressure. Predict your answers, then “work” the problems. For instance: find the average heart rate for a child at rest over a period of 14 days. Graph your results on a poster board.
7. Conduct research to find some interesting mathematical facts about the circulatory system (how many times your heart beats, how much blood is pumped through your body each day, etc.). Calculate these facts over a year, over ten years, over a lifetime. Present your findings in an interesting way to share with your classmates.
BODILY-KINESTHETIC
8. Choreograph an original dance that communicates the word heart and the emotion of heart.
9. Write a skit about the heart and how it functions. You may ask your classmates to participate in your skit.
MUSICAL
10. Create a jump rope jingle that will help the class remember what we have learned about the heart, blood flow, etc.
11. Compose and perform a musical piece which conveys your feelings about the heart and its role in our lives.
12. Write and perform a song which describes the heart and the circulatory system.
These projects will be due on April 16th for Monday's class and April 18th for Wednesday's class.
