During many units of study a voluntary long-term independent project will be offered. This highly involved project will be much like the type historically associated with and assigned to gifted students. While strongly encouraged, it will not be manditory, and no penalty will be given to those students opting not to do the project. I feel strongly that Target students NEED an opportunity like this. Highly capable children, like yours, benefit greatly from detailed, in-depth examinations of topics or areas of study, especially when the topic interests them. These projects will help push them to delve deeply into a topic independently; sometimes a push is needed. These projects will provide your child with a chance to really "go for it" in a way s/he chooses. A variety of projects will usually be offered from which the students may choose. These projects will be described in broad terms with very general "requirements." What the children choose to do with it is up to them. Your child may take it as far as s/he wishes. A due date will be given, and there will be time given for sharing completed projects with classmates. This will be an opportunity for children to informally share their wonderful work and receive praise and feedback. Student projects will be assessed by their teacher. This will provide a cr itical response to affirm the work's strenghths and guide future work. Please encourage your child to take on this opportunity. You can best support them by providing materials and transportation. While it may be tempting to offer your expertise, please refrain. This is a fabulous chance for children to learn, enjoy themselves, gain self-confidence, and feel empowered. Thank you for your help and support.
