Mrs.Alvarado’s Class News Friday, Oct. 28th
Dear Parents,
Thank you for coming in to conference about your child!!! It was so nice to share your child’s successes! I feel like the class has shown so much growth already this year! Take a look at what next week looks like:
Reading- We were going to finish up the book Wishes, Kisses, and Pigs this week but I over planned! With the shortened days we just did not finish everything so we will finish up next week! Our focus lessons will be on comprehension, summarizing, antonyms, synonyms, and compare/contrast.
Grammar- We are reviewing pronouns at the beginning of the week. Then we are moving onto story elements.
Social Studies- We have been learning about different countries in Europe that made claims in the new world. We will be having a test on Chapter 4 on Wednesday. A study guide came home today to help prepare for the test. The next unit in science is on “Sound and Light”. I am going to break up the unit into two parts. I am going to teach Light first and then give a quiz. Then I am going to teach Sound and give a quiz. The information on “Light” is in Chapter 4, lesson 2 in the Science Book.
Spelling- Words with an r-influenced e sound that is spelled –er, -ear, -ere, -eer.
Math- We have been working on multiplying 3 digits by two digits. We will be having a test over Chapter 9 on Tuesday. Chapter 10 begins long division! Hold onto your hats it’s going to be a bumpy ride! Long division usually takes a while to master so be patient!
Writer’s Workshop- We are working in the writing trait “Organization”. Our lessons will be on transition words and sequencing to organize writing.
Have a fabulous fall weekend! Mrs.Alvarado
Mrs.Alvarado’s Class News Friday, Oct.14th
Dear Parents,
We have had a fun learning week! We had High Touch High Tech on Thursday! The program was “Meteorology Madness”! This class had a lot of fun with the experiments! We also wrapped up the early explorers with a test on Tuesday. The class did really well! I think they are learning to prepare better for tests now! In the computer lab we finished our Frindle brochures. Take a look at what we are doing next week:
Reading- We finished up Encyclopedia Brown on Friday. Next week we will be starting Wishes, Kisses and Pigs! This book is one of my favorites. It is a fantasy with a little mystery to solve at the end! I think the class will really enjoy it! Our focus lessons will be on compound words, comprehension, summarizing, and vocabulary.
Grammar- We have been working on a pronoun unit. We will be finishing the unit with a review on Monday and Tuesday. We will then work using quotation marks correctly and story elements.
Math- We finished Chapter 7 with a test on Thursday. Chapter 8 teaches multiplying 2 digits by 2 digits. This can be challenging for some students at the beginning. I will model many, many problems for them and we will practice, practice, practice. I am planning on giving a test next Thursday over Chapter 8. However, if the class seems like they need more time I may push it back a few days.
Science- We started a fun unit on simple machines and forces/motion. Next week we will have a science lab where the class must use materials to make a simple machine and complete a task. We will also be working on identifying simple machines in the computer lab. We will be reviewing on Thursday and testing on Friday. I will send home a study guide on Tuesday so they will have plenty of time to prepare for the test.
Spelling- Words with a “W” sound before the vowel. Examples: warrior, worthy, waffle….
Writer’s Workshop- We have been working in the trait of “organization”. We worked using transition words in our writing this week. Next week we will use sequencing to help organize our writing.
Fall Festival tonight! Hope everyone has fun! Have a great weekend! Mrs.Alvarado

Reading- We are still reading Encyclopedia Brown. The class is doing a great job with comprehension and sentence structure. Next week our focus lessons will be on sequencing, comparing/contrasting, character traits, story elements, and vocabulary.
Spelling- r-influenced o in accented syllables.
Grammar- We worked on picking out object and subject pronouns this week. Next week we will be learning about possessive pronouns and homophones.

We will be using a timeline to write each student’s history. We will also talk about using transition words to help organize our writing.
